ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation No. 86 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) - It covers uniform provisions regarding the installation of lighting and light signal devices of agricultural or forestry tractors and the tests applied accordingly.

This Regulation applies to vehicles in category T (1) regarding light signal devices, lighting and lighting installations. Lamp means a device designed to illuminate the path (headlight) or to give a light signal. Rear license plate lamps and retro reflectors will also be considered as lamps within the scope of the regulation.

An application for approval of a vehicle type with respect to the installation of its lamps is submitted by the vehicle manufacturer or its duly accredited representative. Lighting and light-signaling devices are expected to maintain their characteristics under normal use and despite any vibrations to which they may be exposed.

Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
