UN / ECE R 83 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation 83 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — It covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of vehicles regarding the emission of pollutants according to motor fuel requirements and the tests applied accordingly.

This Regulation lays down the technical requirements for the type-approval of motor vehicles. In addition, this Regulation lays down the rules for in-service suitability, durability of pollution control devices and on-board diagnostic (OBD) systems.

This Regulation applies to vehicles of categories M 2, M 610, N 1 and N 2 with a reference mass not exceeding 1 2 kg. At the request of the manufacturer, the type approval granted under this Regulation may be extended from the above-mentioned vehicles to M 2.840, M 1, N 2 and N 1 vehicles with a reference mass not exceeding 2 kg and meeting the conditions laid down in this Regulation.

Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
