UN / ECE R 144 Tests

Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 144 Tests

UN ECE R144 tests cover a series of tests performed in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of vehicles in the categories specified in the regulation in terms of Accident Emergency Call Systems (AECS) equipment.

UN / ECE R 144 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation No. 144 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) – It covers the uniform provisions regarding Accident Emergency Call Systems (AECS) and the tests applied accordingly.

This Regulation applies to:

  • Approval of Accident Emergency Call Components (AECC) intended to be installed as part of an Accident Emergency Pager (AECD).
  • Approval of AECDs intended for installation on vehicles of category M1 and N1.
  • Approval of vehicles of category M1 and N1 with regard to the Accident Emergency Call System (AECS), when equipped with an AECD approved according to Part Ib of this Regulation.
  • Approval according to AECS of category M1 and N1 vehicles when equipped with an AECD not separately approved according to Part Ib of this Regulation.

AECD (Accident Emergency Call Device) means a unit or set of components that perform at least the following functions:

  • Receiving and/or generating automatic and manual trigger signals; and
  • Minimum Data Set (MSD) Submission.

It can also perform any of the following functions:

  • Receiving or locating the vehicle;
  • providing a warning signal; and
  • Allowing bidirectional audio signals for voice communication, unless otherwise specified in this regulation.

Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
