Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 153 Tests

UN ECE R153 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation to evaluate the safety of fuel and electric power transmission systems in the event of a rear-end collision of vehicles in the categories specified in the regulation.

UN / ECE R 153 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation No. 153 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — Covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of vehicles and the tests applied in connection with the fuel system integrity and safety of the electric power train system in the event of a rear-end collision.

This Regulation applies to category M3.500 vehicles with a total allowable mass not exceeding 1 kg, and to category N1 vehicles in terms of fuel system integrity and safety of the high-voltage electric powertrain in the event of a rear-end collision.

The purpose of the rear-end crash test is to simulate the rear-end collision conditions of another moving vehicle. The test area should be large enough to accommodate the impactor propulsion system and allow post-impact displacement of the impact vehicle and installation of test equipment.

The part where vehicle impact and displacement occurs shall be horizontal, flat and smooth and represent a normal, dry, uncontaminated road surface. The speed of the impact will be 50.0 ± 2.0 km/h. The combined mass of the transport and impactor will be 1.100 ± 20 kg.

Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
