UN ECE R156 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of software and software update systems of vehicles in the categories specified in the regulation.

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.
Regulation No. 156 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — Covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of vehicles and the tests applied in relation to the software update and software updates management system.
This Regulation applies to M, N, O, R, S and T vehicles that allow software updates. Software update means a package used to upgrade the software to a new version, including a change in the vehicle's configuration parameters.
RX Software Identification Number (RXSWIN) means a unique identifier identified by the vehicle manufacturer, representing information about the type-approval related software of the Electronic Control System that contributes to the characteristics of the vehicle concerned. For each RXSWIN there will be an auditable record describing all RXSWIN related software of the vehicle type before and after an update. This will include information of software versions and their integrity verification data for all relevant software for each RXSWIN.
Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
