UN / ECE R8 Tests

UN ECE R8 tests cover a series of tests applied to motor vehicle headlights that may contain lenses made of glass or plastic material and carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation.

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval in this respect, but only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation 8 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — Halogen filament lamps (H1, H2, H3, HB3, HB4, H7, H8, H9) emitting asymmetrical low beam or high beam or both. It covers the uniform provisions regarding HIR1, HIR2 and/or H11) approval and the tests applied accordingly.

According to UN ECE R8 regulation;

• 'Lens' means the outermost component of the headlight (unit) that transmits light from the illuminating surface
• 'Coating' means any product or product applied in one or more layers to the outer face of a lens

The conformity tests in the UN ECE R8 regulation cover the verification of the photometric properties and the change in the vertical position of the cutting line under the influence of heat. The tests are carried out according to the methods specified in this regulation.

Within the scope of UN ECE R8 tests, the following tests are carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation;

• Stability test of photometric performance
• Change test in the vertical position of the cutting line under the influence of heat
•  Resistance to atmospheric and chemical substances
• Resistance to temperature changes
• Resistance to detergents and hydrocarbons
• Resistance to mechanical degradation
• Adhesion test of coatings
• Spray Tests
• Adhesive tape adhesion test

For the test to be considered successful, the test results must meet the requirements of the regulation.
