UN ECE R48 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of the installation of light signal devices of M and N category vehicles and their trailers.

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.
Regulation No. 48 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — Covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of vehicles for the installation of lighting and light-signaling devices and the tests applied accordingly.
According to this regulation, 'Approval of a vehicle' means approval of a vehicle type with regard to the number and installation method of lighting and light-signaling devices.
For all light signaling devices, including those mounted on side panels, the reference axis of the lamp when fitted to the vehicle must be parallel to the vehicle's road bearing plane; in addition, it must be perpendicular to the median longitudinal plane of the vehicle in the case of side reflectors and side marker lamps and parallel to this plane in the case of all other signaling devices. A tolerance of ± 3° in all directions will be allowed. In addition, the specific installation instructions given by the manufacturer must be followed.
All light signal devices in the vehicle are evaluated according to the tests specified in the regulation to be evaluated separately. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
