A European standard, BS 5852-1, provides test methods for assessing the flammability of material combinations when exposed to a lit cigarette or a lit match accidentally applied. Guidance notes for designers and specifiers are provided in the standard annex.

This standard is used to evaluate the flammability properties of assembled materials, such as covers and paddings used in upholstered seats, when exposed to the flame of a smoldering cigarette or the equivalent of a match flame as the ignition source. Essentially, all elements of indoor upholstered furniture must comply with applicable legal regulations. These regulations explain what technical fire methods to use for a piece of furniture or its components, specify requirements and warn how often tests should be done. In some cases, these regulations impose requirements beyond those specified in the referenced test standards.
Tests in accordance with the BS 5852-1 standard are performed in a test cabinet with calibrated airflow. The cover fabric and padding are put on a test setup to create a small sofa with a 90 degree angle between the seat and back. The ignition sources are located in the space between the seat and the back.
During the cigarette test, the test assembly is allowed to smolder for one hour from the start of the test. The fire source is not kept longer than this time. The test assembly is also not allowed to char more than 100 mm in any direction upwards from the cigarette. The test assembly is exposed to a flame equivalent to the flame of a match for 20 seconds.
In short, the BS 5852-1 standard describes methods for evaluating the flammability of the following main material combinations :
Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides flammability testing services for smokers' upholstered composite materials for sitting purposes within the scope of BS 5852-1 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
