NF C20-921 Fire Tests - Part 2: Test Methods - Glow Wire Test Methods - General

The NF C20-921 standard, a French standard, defines a glow wire test method within the framework of fire testing. During this test, a temperature of 960 degrees Celsius is applied to the glowing wire for 30 seconds. The extinguishing time should be less than 30 seconds. If the material produces any burning droplets , it has passed the test.

During the preparation of this standard, IEC 60695-2 Fire hazard test - glowing / hot wire based test methods standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) was taken as a basis. This standard, which includes a set of test methods, is based on the final product. It is intended to simulate the effects of thermal stresses produced by an electrically heated source to represent a fire hazard. This test method is applied to check that, under defined test conditions, a final product exposed to an electrically heated source either has a limited ability to ignite or, if ignited, a limited ability to spread flame. However, fire hazard analysis, flammability aspects and spread of flame to other products are not covered by this standard.

In general, the glow wire test is performed by heating an element to a predetermined temperature. The heated element is called a glow wire.

To date, a number of test methods have been developed to assess material flammability and fire resistance. These methods include both direct flame and indirect flame test methods. The direct flame method is a long accepted test method and involves applying a direct flame to a vertically or horizontally mounted specimen under controlled conditions. On the other hand, the indirect flame method has a non-flammable heat source applied to a sample. The glow wire test is an example of the indirect flame method. Test results from the application of these methods serve to compare the propensity of materials to resist ignition, self-extinguishing flames, and not spreading fire by dripping.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides glow wire testing services within the scope of fire tests within the scope of NF C20-921 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
