IMO FTPC Part 7: Fire Testing for Vertically Supported Textiles and Films

IMO FTPC Part 7: Fire Testing for Vertically Supported Textiles and Films

Developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), IMO FTPC Part 7: Fire test procedure for vertically supported textiles and films is a fire test procedure for determining the surface flammability of curtains and reinforced textiles on ships.

IMO FTPC Part 7: Fire Testing for Vertically Supported Textiles and Films

Ships sailing in international waters must meet certain requirements. The European Union and the United States Coast Guard (USCG) require certification of products placed on these ships and the issuance of type approval certificates for other products. Fire test reports alone are not accepted and it is necessary to contact a notified body for marine Certification to obtain these documents and the tests must comply with IMO FTPC procedures.

During testing, the sample is placed in a vertical metal frame. A flame is applied to the surface and lower edge of the sample. It is observed whether there is ignition or not. After the flame period, the possibility of burning to the edges, burning droplets (through the cotton pad), charred length and surface glare are observed. Products are tested and evaluated according to the fire test procedure for determining the flame resistance of vertically supported textile films specified in resolution A.471(XII).

In the tests, at least 20 samples (170x220 mm) are cut on both sides of the fabric. If the edges of the fabric are different, both sides are tested. Products treated with flame retardants are tested before and after ten complete cleaning and drying cycles. The test specimen is placed in a vertical metal frame placed in the test cabinet. The test sample is ignited with a propane gas flame. Preliminary tests are made for both directions and the worst ignition scenario is selected and 5 more tests are made in both directions. A period of post-flame, combustion, ignition of the cotton at the bottom, an average length of charcoal and surface glow are observed.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides IMO FTPC Part 7: Fire testing services for vertically supported textiles and films, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
