ISO 7202 Fire Protection - Fire Extinguishing Agents - Powder

ISO 7202 Fire Protection - Fire Extinguishing Agents - Powder

The ISO 7202 Fire Protection - Fire Extinguishing Agents - Powder standard, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), describes the requirements for the chemical and physical properties and minimum performance in defined test methods of fire extinguishing powders suitable for use against class A, B, C, and D fires. This standard includes requirements regarding the information and data that must be declared by the manufacturer. The classification of fires is found in the ISO 3941 standard.

In accordance with this standard, samples for testing should be collected using a method that provides as representative a sample as possible. To prevent the risk of condensation, it is essential that the temperature of the powder in its original container is not lower than the ambient air temperature when the sample is collected. Sample containers should not be opened until temperature equilibrium with the laboratory air has been achieved.

When sampling from a batch, at least 12 kg of material should be randomly selected from the batch. For batch testing, at least 2,5 kg of material should be randomly selected from a container. Properly identified samples should be stored separately in clean, dry, airtight, non-reactive containers. A suitable sampling method is given in Annex C.

The fire performance of fire extinguishing powders should be evaluated according to the procedures given in the ISO 7165 standard:

  • Class A: When tested using the method specified in this standard, extinguishing powders claimed by the manufacturer to be suitable for Class A fires must conform to one of the minimum Class A ratings specified in ISO 7165.
  • Class B: When tested using the method specified in this standard, extinguishing powders claimed by the manufacturer to be suitable for Class B fires must conform to one of the minimum Class B ratings specified in ISO 7165.
  • Class C: Fire extinguishing powders claimed by the manufacturer to be suitable for Class C fires must comply with this standard. This standard does not require any fire testing for the performance of fire extinguishing powders against Class C fires. Suitability for use against Class C fires can only be claimed for Class B or AB fire extinguishing powders.
  • Class D: When tested using the method specified in this standard, extinguishing powders claimed by the manufacturer to be suitable for Class D fires must comply with the ISO 7165 standard. Extinguishing powders suitable for Class D fires are generally not suitable for use in other classes of fires. Special environments and application tools are usually required.

The ISO 7202 standard specifies the requirements for dry chemical fire extinguishing powders, including minimum performance criteria based on defined test methods as well as their chemical and physical properties. These powders are designed for use against fires in the following classes:

  • Class A: Solid materials that form glowing embers (e.g., wood, paper, textiles)
  • Class B: Flammable liquids or liquefiable solids.
  • Class C: Flammable gases.
  • Class D: Flammable metals.

This standard covers different types of powders, including those listed below:

  • BC powders (for B and C fires)
  • ABC powders (for A, B, and C fires)
  • D powders (for metal fires)

This standard details requirements such as sampling, characterization, fire test performance, and specific testing of moisture content, particle size distribution, bulk density, and monoammonium phosphate content for ABC type powders.

In short, the ISO 7202 standard ensures that extinguishing powders possess the performance, stability, and safety characteristics necessary for reliable fire extinguishing. The main objectives of this standard are:

  • To define quality and performance requirements for fire extinguishing powders.
  • To define test procedures to evaluate powder efficacy.
  • To ensure consistent fire extinguishing capability across different manufacturers.
  • To support safety and reliability in fire protection systems.

The ISO 7202 standard helps ensure that extinguishing powders function effectively in emergency situations by standardizing these aspects.

This standard also provides information about the types of fire extinguishing powders. The ISO 7202 standard primarily addresses dry chemical powders used to extinguish different classes of fires. These include:

  • BC powders: Effective against flammable liquid and gas fires.
  • ABC multi-purpose powders: Suitable for solids, liquids, and gases.
  • Specialized powders for specific industrial applications.

Typical chemical components include:

  • Monoammonium phosphate
  • Sodium bicarbonate
  • Potassium bicarbonate
  • Various additives for fluidity and moisture resistance.

The ISO 7202 standard defines several key requirements for fire extinguishing powders:

  • Physical properties: The powder should have the following characteristics:
  • Good fluidity
  • Suitable particle size distribution
  • Low moisture absorption
  • Resistance to clumping and compaction

These features ensure that the powder is discharged from the fire extinguisher without any problems.

  • Chemical stability: This standard requires powders to remain stable under the following conditions:
  • Long-term storage
  • Exposure to temperature changes
  • Humidity conditions

Consistency ensures that the extinguishing agent retains its effectiveness over time.

  • Fire suppression performance: The ISO 7202 standard includes fire test procedures to verify that powders can effectively suppress fires. The tests evaluate the following:
  • Flame extinguishing speed
  • Ability to prevent re-ignition.
  • Efficiency in specified fire classes.
  • Compatibility: The powder must be compatible with:
  • extinguishing components
  • Propellant gases
  • Storage containers

This prevents corrosion, clogging, or equipment failure.

The ISO 7202 standard provides the following test methods for evaluating powder properties:

  • Particle size analysis
  • Moisture content determination
  • Fluidity tests
  • Resistance to agglomeration
  • Fire performance test

These tests help manufacturers verify that their fire extinguishing powders meet international quality requirements.

The ISO 7202 standard is widely used in sectors where fire protection systems are vital, including:

  • Building fire safety systems
  • Industrial plants
  • Oil and gas facilities
  • Automotive and transportation sectors
  • Fire safety for aircraft and marine vessels.

This standard helps ensure that portable fire extinguishers and fixed systems function effectively in emergency situations.
