EN ISO 6182 Fire Protection - Automatic Sprinkler Systems
The “EN ISO 6182 Fire protection - Automatic sprinkler systems” standard, which is based on a European standard and later published by the International Standards Organization (ISO), consists of the following subsections published under the same title:

- The standard "EN ISO 6182-1 Part 1: Requirements and test methods for sprinkler systems" specifies the performance and marking requirements and test methods for conventional, spray, flat spray, sidewall, extended coverage, domestic and storage sprinklers, including early suppression, rapid response, electrically activated sprinklers and activation monitored sprinklers for use in water-based fire protection systems. This standard does not apply to sprinklers with multiple orifices. A sprinkler is a heat-sensitive device designed to react at a specified temperature and automatically release a stream of water and distribute it in a specified pattern and quantity over a specified area.
- The standard “EN ISO 6182-2 Part 2: Requirements and test methods for wet alarm valves, delay chambers, water motor alarms and wet pipe automatic fire protection systems” describes the performance, requirements, test methods and marking requirements for wet alarm valves, delay chambers, water motor alarms and the relevant trim specified by manufacturers for use in wet pipe automatic fire protection systems. This standard does not apply to performance and test requirements for other ancillary components or attachments to alarm valves. The test methods described in this standard include:
- Spring and diaphragm testing
- Sealing element tests
- Hot water aging test for non-metallic components (excluding gaskets and seals and other elastomeric parts)
- Air aging test for non-metallic components (excluding gaskets and seals and other elastomeric parts)
- Endurance test
- Hydraulic friction loss test
- Valve leakage and deformation tests
- Body strength test
- Operation test
- Water motor alarm tests
- Delay chamber tests
- Salt fog corrosion test
- The standard "EN ISO 6182-3 Part 3: Requirements and test methods for dry pipe valves" describes the performance, requirements, test methods and marking requirements for dry pipe valves used in dry pipe automatic fire protection systems and the relevant trim specified by the manufacturers. The performance and test requirements for other auxiliary components or attachments of dry pipe valves are outside the scope of this standard.
- The standard “EN ISO 6182-4 Part 4: Requirements and test methods for quick-opening devices” describes the performance and test requirements for accelerators used in conjunction with dry pipe valves in fire protection systems and used to accelerate the operation of the valves when one or more sprinklers operate. The performance test methods described in this standard include:
- Metallic materials, components
- Non-metallic components
- Air oven aging for non-metallic components (except seals, diaphragms and gaskets) normally exposed to air
- Hot water aging for non-metallic components (excluding seals, diaphragms and gaskets) normally exposed to water
- Leak test
- Strength test
- Business tests
- Balance time test
- The standard "EN ISO 6182-5 Part 5: Requirements and test methods for flood valves" specifies the performance requirements, test methods and marking requirements for flood valves and the relevant trims specified by manufacturers for use in flood and pre-action automatic fire protection systems. The flood valves covered by these requirements may be operated by hydraulic, pneumatic, electric, mechanical, manual or thermal means or combinations thereof. The performance and test requirements for other ancillary components or connections to flood valves are outside the scope of this standard. This standard does not cover thermally operated valves, which are those valves that are released by heat acting directly on the valve. This type of valve uses a thermal device, such as a link and lever arrangement or the glass bulb of a sprinkler, to hold the valve closed. Operation of the thermal device causes the valve to open.
- The standard “EN ISO 6182-6 Part 6: Requirements and test methods for control valves” describes the performance, requirements, test methods and marking requirements for control valves used to supply water in automatic fire protection systems. This standard does not apply to trim valves. Control valves (check valves) are types of valves that allow fluid flow in one direction only.
- The standard “EN ISO 6182-7 Part 7: Requirements and test methods for early suppression quick response sprinklers” describes the performance requirements, test methods and marking requirements for pendent early suppression quick response sprinklers. This standard currently provides the requirements for K202 and K242 pendent early suppression quick response sprinklers. Early suppression quick response automatic sprinklers are sprinklers designed to provide early suppression of fire when installed in suitable sprinkler pipework.
- The standard "EN ISO 6182-8 Part 8: Requirements and test methods for pre-action dry alarm valves" specifies the performance requirements, test methods and marking requirements for pre-action dry alarm valves, valve sets and the relevant trim specified by manufacturers, used in non-latching pre-action automatic fire protection systems. The performance and test requirements for other ancillary components or attachments to pre-action dry valves are not covered by this standard. A pre-action valve set is a pre-action alarm valve or valve combination that retains air in a closed sprinkler system and is opened by a combination of sprinkler release or release system activation.
- The standard “EN ISO 6182-9 Part 9: Requirements and test methods for water mist nozzles” describes the performance requirements, test methods and marking requirements for water mist nozzles.
- The standard “EN ISO 6182-10 Part 10: Requirements and test methods for domestic sprinklers” describes the performance requirements, test methods and marking requirements for domestic sprinklers. These sprinklers are designed to provide control of fires in domestic dwellings, to prevent flashover (full involvement) in the room where the fire originates and to increase the probability of successful escape or evacuation of the occupants. A domestic sprinkler is a sprinkler designed to provide fire control in domestic areas.
- The standard “EN ISO 6182-11 Part 11: Requirements and test methods for pipe hangers” describes the construction requirements, performance requirements, test methods and marking requirements for typical types of pipe hangers. A pipe hanger is an assembly of components used alone or in combination with other assemblies to support the gravity loads of a piping system. A pipe hanger may consist of a building connection component (support fixing), a connector, rod or equivalent and a pipe connection component, or a simple bracket and a building connection component (support fixing), as shown in the figures.
- The standard “EN ISO 6182-12 Part 12: Requirements and test methods for grooved end components for steel pipe systems” specifies the performance requirements, groove dimensions, test methods and marking requirements for couplings used to join grooved steel tubes, pipes, grooved end fittings and other grooved end components up to a nominal diameter of 300 DN. It is the responsibility of the manufacturer to implement a quality control program to ensure that production consistency meets the requirements of this standard in the same way as originally tested samples.
- The standard “EN ISO 6182-13 Part 13: Requirements and test methods for sprinklers with extended coverage” describes the performance and marking requirements and test methods for sprinklers with extended coverage. These sprinklers are designed to control fires in residential areas or parts of residential areas where the content or flammability is low, such as office areas. Extended coverage sprinklers are sprinklers with a specific coverage area greater than 21 m2.
- The standard “EN ISO 6182-14 Part 14: Requirements and test methods for water spray nozzles” describes the performance requirements, test methods and marking requirements for open water spray nozzles. This standard does not apply to open sprinklers or open water mist nozzles. Installation factors such as nozzle spacing, design densities, wind and hot gas velocities are not intended to be addressed by this document. A water spray nozzle is a water discharge device that will distribute water in a defined directional pattern when discharging water under pressure.
