D45 1333 Combustion Behavior - Materials in Passenger Compartment - Horizontal Flammability

In the D45 1333 standard, developed by the PSA Peugeot Citroen group, the second largest automobile manufacturer in Europe, the combustion behavior of the materials in the passenger compartment of the vehicles when exposed to vertical and horizontal flames is explained and a test method is presented for the measurement of propagation velocity and burn length.

Companies that manufacture various products and components for automotive products must prove that their products meet relevant safety standards, including flammability and flammability. All products must be protected from the risk of uncontrolled fire. Failure to do so could result in unexpected costs, harm to customers and damage to brand reputation. In this regard, combustion and flammability tests are commonly carried out in advanced laboratories. One of these tests is the horizontal flammability test method of materials in the passenger compartment defined in the D45 1333 standard.

The main test for the automotive sector is measuring the flame spread rate according to the ISO 3795 standard, followed by adapting standards such as the D45 1333 standard to suit the manufacturer. Interior material flammability assessment is based on the principle that if the material's combustion rate is zero or small under minimal flame exposure, a fire is unlikely to develop inside a car.

The principle of the test method described in the D45 1333 standard is based on igniting the tip of a test piece held horizontally with “U” shaped jaws and monitoring the burning pattern. In this way, the burn rate between the two reference marks is determined.

The test piece consists of two “U” shaped metal plates or frames made of corrosion resistant material. To fix the test piece, the bottom plate is equipped with pins, and the top plate is equipped with corresponding holes. The pins also serve as measuring points at the beginning and end of combustion. The bottom of the sample is placed 178 mm above the floor of the combustion chamber. The distance between the front edge of the test piece holder and the end of the chamber should be 22 mm.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides horizontal flammability testing services to determine the combustion behavior of materials in the passenger compartment of the vehicles, within the scope of the D45 1333 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
