EN 13501-3 Fire Classification of Construction Products and Construction Elements - Part 3: Fire Resistant Ducts and Fire Dampers

The European standard, “EN 13501-3 Fire classification of building products and building elements - Part 3: Classification using data from fire resistance tests on products and elements used in building service installations: fire-resistant ducts and fire dampers”, describes the procedure for classifying the fire resistance performance of building products and building elements used as components of building service installations, using data from fire resistance tests that fall directly within the application area of the relevant test method.

Classification based on the extended application of test results is also included within the scope of this standard.

Products/components used in ventilation systems include the following (excluding smoke and heat exhaust ventilation):

  • Fire-resistant ducts.
  • Fire dampers.

The relevant test methods for these products/components are defined in this standard.

In the field of building safety, fire performance is a critical factor affecting everything from material selection to compliance with legal regulations. The EN 13501 series of standards provides a harmonized framework for classifying the fire behavior of building products in the European Union and beyond. Essentially, the EN 13501 standard ensures that building materials contribute minimally to fire spread, smoke generation, and other hazards, thus aligning with the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) for CE marking. Since its implementation, this standard has become the gold standard for fire safety in Europe, replacing older national systems.

The EN 13501 standard is a family of standards covering various aspects of fire performance. Most notably, EN 13501-1 focuses on the fire response of building products, excluding flooring. Other sections address specific applications such as floor coverings, cables (EN 13501-6), and roofs (EN 13501-5).

EN 13501-3 is a specific standard within the EN 13501 series, focusing on the fire resistance classification of structural elements such as ducts and dampers used in fire compartment systems. Unlike EN 13501-1, which addresses the fire response of building products, this standard evaluates how well specific elements resist fire penetration and maintain their functionality under fire conditions. Presented as part of the European Union’s efforts to establish harmonized fire safety standards under the Construction Products Regulation (CPR), this standard ensures that elements critical to fire control perform reliably, enabling safe evacuation and limiting the spread of fire.

The EN 13501-3 standard applies specifically to components that are an integral part of building service installations. These include:

  • Fire-resistant ducts: Ventilation or smoke exhaust ducts designed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke between compartments.
  • Fire dampers: Devices within duct systems that automatically close to prevent the passage of fire and smoke while maintaining the integrity of the partition.

The primary aim of this standard is to classify these elements according to their resistance to fire penetration, heat transfer, and smoke leakage, and to ensure they meet the legal requirements for fire compartmentalization. By providing a standardized classification, this standard facilitates CE marking and allows manufacturers to demonstrate compliance in EU markets. It complements other fire safety standards and ensures that building elements contribute to overall fire control strategies, particularly in high-risk structures such as hospitals, schools, or commercial buildings.

EN 13501-3 classifies fire-resistant ducts and fire dampers using data from fire resistance tests and focusing on three key performance criteria:

  • Integrity (E): The element's ability to prevent the passage of flames and hot gases.
  • Insulation (I): The capacity to limit temperature increase on exposed sides by preventing the spread of fire through heat conduction.
  • Smoke leakage (S): For fire dampers, the ability to restrict smoke passage, which is critical for maintaining safe escape routes.

The classification is expressed as a combination of these criteria, followed by a duration indicating how long the element maintains its performance under standard fire conditions. Common durations are 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, or 240 minutes. Examples include:

  • E 60: Maintaining integrity for 60 minutes (no flame or gas passage).
  • EI 60: Integrity and insulation are maintained for 60 minutes (limiting temperature rise to at least 140 degrees on the outside and at least 180 degrees on the exposed side).
  • E 60 S: Integrity and smoke leakage resistance for 60 minutes (smoke leakage for dampers at least 360 m3/h/m2).
  • EI 120 S: Integrity, insulation, and smoke leakage resistance for 120 minutes.

The “S” designation is particularly critical for fire dampers, as smoke inhalation is a leading cause of fire-related deaths. Classifications may also specify orientation (e.g., horizontal or vertical ducts) and mounting conditions (e.g., inside or outside the fire compartment), as these affect performance.

The classification under the EN 13501-3 standard is based on fire resistance tests carried out according to specific European standards, ensuring consistency and reliability. The main test methods are as follows:

  • EN 1366-2 Fire resistance tests for service installations - Fire dampers: Simulates fire exposure in a furnace to test the damper's ability to maintain its closing and integrity, insulation, and resistance to smoke leakage.
  • EN 1366-1 Fire resistance tests for service installations - Ventilation ducts: Evaluates fire-resistant ducts in terms of integrity and insulation when exposed to fire from inside (Type A) or outside (Type B).
  • EN 1366-8 Fire resistance tests for service installations - Smoke exhaust ducts: For ducts specifically designed to exhaust smoke during a fire, to ensure they retain their functionality and limit the spread of smoke.
