NF P92-512 Determination of Durability of Fire Reaction Classification of Materials

NF P92-512 Determination of Durability of Fire Reaction Classification of Materials

In the French standard "NF P92-512 Fire safety - Building - Reaction to fire tests - Determination of resistance to fire classification of materials," accelerated appearance tests have been made more sensitive to specific subjects and properties, and the resistance of the reaction classes has been increased accordingly. This resistance is much more robust depending on the nature of the material and the type of application required.

NF P92-512 Determination of Durability of Fire Reaction Classification of Materials

For public establishments, it is vital to comply with fire safety standards based on their activities and ability to serve the public. For example, "M1," "M2," and "M3" refer to the classifications of the fire resistance standard NF P92-512, regulated by French legislation and specifically applicable to combustible materials used in buildings, such as textiles, wall coverings, ceilings, and decorative panels.

The main purpose of the NF P92-512 standard is to classify materials according to their behavior against fire in order to ensure a certain level of safety in buildings in the event of fire.

The classification of flammability of materials consists of 6 categories according to the resistance time of the material at a certain temperature:

  • M0: Non-flammable materials such as cement, brick, glass. These materials will not burn at all.
  • M1: Combustible and non-combustible materials such as PVC, composite materials, and self-igniting materials. These materials can be burned, but they do not ignite readily and do not limit the spread of flames.
  • M2: Retardant flammable and combustible materials, such as certain treated fabrics and compressed wood fiber panels. These materials are more difficult to ignite and burn more slowly.
  • M3: Moderately flammable and combustible materials, such as untreated wood panels and certain types of plastics. These materials ignite and burn at a moderate rate.
  • M4: Flammable materials that ignite easily, such as paper, cardboard, and certain thin plastics. These materials ignite easily and burn quickly.
  • M5: Highly flammable combustible materials such as cellulose, untreated synthetic foams, and light textiles. These materials ignite very easily and burn very quickly.

Most materials used in environments where fire safety is a priority are classified as M1, for example,

  • Public buildings: schools, hospitals, shopping malls.
  • Public establishments: cinemas, theatres, performance halls.
  • Transportation: interiors of trains, airplanes and other public transportation.

A material treated with M1 fire resistance will still burn and lose its properties when exposed to fire, but the flames will not spread. It helps slow the spread of flames and smoke. M1 fire treatment ensures safety when a fire starts without requiring human intervention. This is about prevention.

The NF P92-512 standard specifies accelerated aging tests to assess how long the fire response classification of building materials (e.g., wood, panels, synthetics, textiles) remains valid under various environmental stresses. This standard applies to materials such as untreated and treated wood, synthetic materials (non-textiles), and textiles for interior use. Some materials with proven aging resistance are excluded from the scope of this standard.

This standard uses accelerated aging procedures. For details, also refer to the standard “NF P92 ‑ 511 Fire safety - Building materials - Fire reaction tests (additional to test methods) - Determination of tests to be selected according to the nature and use of materials”.

The NF P92-512 standard is considered important for the assurance of fire safety over time, especially in public and commercial buildings, for the following reasons:

  • Ensures long-term fire safety performance: Materials used in buildings can deteriorate over time due to moisture, heat, UV exposure, or the aging of flame retardant treatments. This standard verifies whether the initial fire classification (e.g., M1, M2) remains valid after accelerated aging tests that simulate years of environmental degradation. Without this standard, a material may appear fire-resistant when new but become highly flammable just a few years after entering service.
  • Critical for public and high-risk buildings: Schools, hospitals, cinemas, and transportation facilities across the country must use materials with verified and durable fire performance. This standard ensures legal and functional compliance for materials exposed to public use over time.
  • Supports certification and material approval: This standard is part of the test suite used by certification laboratories to verify fire resistance ratings. Materials with temporary or surface-applied fire retardants may lose their classification if not tested under this standard.
  • It prevents false safety from initial ratings: A material may initially be rated M1 (difficult to ignite), but if this is only valid for a short time, relying on it for fire protection can be misleading. This standard ensures that only materials with proven durability are used in situations requiring long-term fire resistance.
  • Bridges international practices: While specific to France, the NF P92-512 standard is conceptually very similar to international standards like EN 13501-1, which also considers durability. It helps manufacturers demonstrate product quality when exporting or operating in international markets.

In short, this standard is important because it ensures that fire classifications remain valid and reliable throughout the life of a material, not just when newly tested.
