IMO FTPC Part 5: Fire Testing for Surface Flammability

IMO FTPC Part 5: Fire Testing for Surface Flammability

Developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), IMO FTPC Part 5: Fire test procedure for surface flammability is a fire test procedure for surface materials for partitions and ceilings, and similar exposed surfaces and flooring between marine equipment. Materials to be used at sea are tested according to this International Maritime Organization fire test procedures code. The results can be used for type approval.

Ships sailing in international waters must meet certain requirements. The European Union and the United States Coast Guard (USCG) require certification of products placed on these ships and the issuance of type approval certificates for other products. Fire test reports alone are not accepted and it is necessary to contact a notified body for marine Certification to obtain these documents and the tests must comply with IMO FTPC procedures.

Improved fire test procedures for the surface flammability of partition, ceiling and deck covering materials comply with the "ISO 1716 Fire reaction tests for products - Determination of the gross heat of combustion (calorific value)" standard. This standard describes a method for determining the gross heat of combustion of fixed volume products in a bomb calorimeter. This method is intended to be applied to solid products. A method for calculating the net heat of combustion is given, if necessary, in the standard annex (Annex A). Information on the precision of the test method is given in Appendix B.

When a material is required to have a surface with low flame spread according to the procedure described in IMO FTPC Chapter 5, the product should comply with this chapter. During testing, surface materials are tested and evaluated according to the test procedure specified in resolution A.653(16). For the purposes of this section, the total heat dissipation value for floor coverings annexed to resolution A.653(16) is replaced by <2.0 MJ. Test duration is 40 minutes.

Our organization also provides fire test services for IMO FTPC Part 5: Surface flammability, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
