The standard “IMO 2010 FTP Code Part 6 - Fire test for primary deck coatings” published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) describes a fire test procedure for determining the surface flammability of deck coating materials on ships. This procedure includes fire test methods for the flammability of primary deck coatings. Materials to be used at sea are tested according to this standard. The results can be used for type approval.

Where primary deck coverings are not required to be readily flammable, deck coverings shall comply with this standard. To determine which layers on the deck are to be tested as floor coverings and which are to be tested as primary deck coverings, the IMO 2010 FTP Code Part 5 standard is followed.
Primary deck coatings are tested and evaluated in advanced laboratories according to the specified fire test procedure in accordance with the resolution “A.687(17) Fire test procedures for flammability of primary deck coatings” published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The test is terminated after 40 minutes.
Primary deck coverings shall use approved materials that are not readily flammable and shall not present toxic or explosive hazards at elevated temperatures in the event of a fire. In this regard, primary deck coverings must be validated to the satisfaction of the management of toxic and explosive hazards. This requirement applies to deck coverings laid on a steel deck slab and, if applied, under a surface material of the floor. However, thin films such as paints are exempt from this assessment.
Where a deck covering applied over a steel deck plate is exposed and no other floor covering is provided, deck coverings in areas where low flame spread materials are required shall meet the requirements of the surface flammability test procedures for bulkhead, ceiling and deck covering materials adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in resolution A.653(16) Recommendation on improved fire test procedures for surface flammability of bulkhead, ceiling and deck finishing materials. If the deck covering is of a multi-layer construction, tests may be required for each layer or for some combination of layers of the deck covering.
Sample deck coating shall be applied to a 3 mm plus/minus 0,3 mm thick steel plate. Samples shall be of nominal thickness and the components and construction of the deck coating shall be the same as those used in the application. If it does not produce burning droplets, it is classified as non-flammable.
Primary deck coating means the first layer of the floor structure that is applied directly over the deck coating and includes any primary coat, anti-corrosion compound or adhesive necessary to provide protection or adhesion to the deck coating.
Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the “IMO 2010 FTP Code Part 6 - Fire testing for primary deck coatings” standard” with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
