IMO FTPC Part 2: Smoke and Toxicity Testing

IMO FTPC Part 2: Smoke and Toxicity Testing

The IMO FTPC Part 2: Smoke and toxicity test procedure, developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), is a smoke and toxicity test procedure applied to marine equipment. Materials to be used at sea are tested according to this International Maritime Organization fire test procedures code. The results can be used for type approval.

IMO FTPC Part 2: Smoke and Toxicity Testing

The procedure described here covers exposed surfaces such as partitions and ceilings, as well as floor coverings. The test duration, which records the total smoke density and gas content, is 10 minutes. During the test, samples are exposed to radiation heat conditions of 25 or 50 kW/m². The toxicity of the following eight compounds is analyzed during the test: carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen fluoride, hydrochloric acid, hydrocyanic acid, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and hydrogen bromide.

According to the IMO FTPC Part 2 Smoke density classification standard, in any test condition, the maximum optical density must be higher than the average by:

  • For curtain, cladding or ceiling surface, over 200
  • For deck lining material, over 400
  • For the ground surface of the material, over 500
  • For plastic pipes and cables, over 400

IMO FTPC Part 2: The standard for smoke and toxicity testing is the "ISO 5659-2 Plastics - Smoke generation - Part 2: Determination of optical density by single chamber test" developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO). This standard describes a test method for measuring smoke production from the exposed surface of material or composite samples. This standard applies to specimens having an essentially flat surface and a thickness not exceeding 25 mm when placed in the horizontal direction and exposed to certain levels of thermal irradiation in a closed cabinet with or without the application of a pilot flame. This test method is applicable to all plastics.

It is aimed that the optical density values determined by this test are taken specifically for the tested form and thickness of the sample or mounting material and not to be considered as natural, basic properties.

Our organization, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, also provides testing services in accordance with IMO FTPC Part 2: Smoke and toxicity test procedure with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
