Developed by the Customer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the CRIB 5 procedure is a very common fire procedure in the hospitality industry. It is important that all furniture in accommodation facilities comply with applicable fire regulations. Tests conducted within this framework are conducted to ensure that any furniture used in the premises is designed and manufactured in such a way as to significantly reduce the risk of potentially life-saving ignition. This test does not completely eliminate the risk of fire spreading, but greatly reduces the risk.

For furniture and furnishings to be considered compliant with relevant regulations, they must successfully pass three separate tests: the burning cigarette test, the comparison test, and the CRIB 5 test.
Although the number of smokers has decreased significantly in recent years, smoking is still one of the leading causes of deadly fires. These fires are usually caused by smoking in bed, sofas and armchairs. For this reason, furniture must pass the smoldering cigarette test (BS EN 5971).
The CRIB 5 test is a flame retardant test method applied to flooring and furniture coverings. In this test method, a cradle-like wooden structure is placed at the base of the test specimen. Each cradle structure is made of wood, glued together, and is 5 stories high. A piece of t-shaped fluff is then placed under the grid along with a non-combustible liquid. The cradles are then lit and observed for 10 minutes or until self-extinguishing. For the test to be successful, each cradle must self-extinguish within 10 minutes and not burn the end of the material or the backing.
A more demanding test is used for high-risk environments such as prison cells. This test method is named CRIB 7.
Often, flame retardant fabrics and textiles are produced differently so that they are naturally more resistant to fire. Organizations such as hotels, hostels, guest houses, bars, boarding schools, dormitories and holiday camps are required to use cots and mattresses that pass the CRIB 5 test as standard.
Our organization also provides CRIP 5 fire test services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
