IMO 2010 FTP Code Part 5 - Surface Flammability Test (Surface Materials and Primary Deck Coating Test)

IMO 2010 FTP Code Part 5 - Surface Flammability Test (Surface Materials and Primary Deck Coating Test)

The “IMO 2010 FTP Code Part 5 - Surface flammability testing (surface materials and primary deck coating testing)” standard published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) focuses on:

IMO 2010 FTP Code Part 5 - Surface Flammability Test (Surface Materials and Primary Deck Coating Test)

  • Flammability of surface materials for partitions, walls and ceilings
  • Floor coverings
  • Primary deck coatings
  • Insulation for cold service systems
  • Adhesives used for A, B and F class sections

In these tests, at least three samples are evaluated for critical flux (flame spread) during extinguishing, heat for sustained combustion, total heat release, maximum heat release rate, and in some cases, burning droplets produced.

If a product is required to have a surface with low flame spread properties, the product must comply with this standard.

If primary deck coverings are not to be readily ignited, they must comply with this standard.

When a surface material product is approved based on testing of a sample applied to a non-combustible, non-metallic substrate, this product shall be approved for application to any non-combustible, non-metallic substrate of similar or greater density (similar density may be defined as a density equal to or greater than 0,75 times the density used during testing) or greater thickness if the density is greater than 400 kg/m3. When a product is approved based on testing results obtained after application to a metallic substrate (e.g. thin paint film or plastic films on steel sheets), this product shall be approved for application to any metallic substrate of similar or greater thickness (similar thickness is defined as a thickness equal to or greater than 0,75 times the thickness of the metallic substrate used during testing).

Surface materials and primary deck coverings are tested and evaluated in accordance with the fire test procedure specified in the annex to this standard (Annex 1). The test may be terminated after 40 minutes. During fire tests for bulkhead, ceiling and deck covering materials and primary deck coverings, there are samples that exhibit various phenomena that cause difficulties in classifying the materials. An annex to this standard provides guidance on the uniform interpretation of such results (Annex 3). Guidelines for test specimen preparation are included in the annex to the standard (Annex 4).

To determine the gross calorific value of surface materials for partitions and ceilings and similar open surfaces, the test method specified in the standard "ISO 1716 Reaction to fire tests for products - Determination of gross heat of combustion (calorific value)" published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is used. This standard specifies a method for determining the gross heat of combustion of products at constant volume in a bomb calorimeter. This method is intended to be applied to solid products.

The primary deck covering is the first layer of a floor structure applied directly over the deck covering and includes any primary coatings, anti-corrosion compounds or adhesives necessary to provide protection or adhesion to the deck covering. The other layers in the floor structure above the deck covering are floor coverings.

A product that is applied directly over the deck covering and is also the exposed surface, i.e. the first layer of a floor structure to which no other layer is applied, is considered a floor covering and must comply with the floor covering requirements.

Where a floor covering is required to have low flame spread, all layers shall comply with this section. If the floor covering is of a multi-layered construction, tests may be required for each layer or for combinations of layers of floor coverings. Each layer of the floor covering, individually or in combinations of layers, shall comply with this standard.

The primer or similar thin coat of paint on the deck coating does not need to comply with these requirements.

When flammable ventilation ducts are required to be constructed of materials with low flame spread properties, the surface flammability test procedure and criteria for linings and ceiling coverings of this section shall apply to these ducts. In the case of homogeneous materials used for ducts, the test shall be applied to the outer surface of the duct, while ducts made of composite materials shall be tested on both sides.

If the exposed surfaces of vapor barriers and adhesives used with insulation and the insulation of pipe fittings for cold service systems are required to have low flame spread properties, the surface flammability test procedure and criteria for cladding and ceilings of this standard apply to these exposed surfaces.

Adhesives used for Class A, B and F sections must be made of materials with low flame spread properties. The surface flammability test procedure and acceptance criteria for linings and ceilings in accordance with the Annex to this standard apply to the adhesive as an exposed surface (Annex 1).

Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the “IMO 2010 FTP Code Part 5 - Surface flammability testing (surface materials and primary deck coating testing)” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
