IMO FTPC Part 9: Fire Testing for Bearing Components

IMO FTPC Part 9: Fire Testing for Bearing Components

Developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), IMO FTPC Part 9: Fire test procedure for bearing components is a fire test procedure for determining the surface flammability of bearing components used in ships. Materials to be used at sea are tested according to this International Maritime Organization fire test procedures code.

IMO FTPC Part 9: Fire Testing for Bearing Components

When bedding components are required to have resistance properties to flame ignition and propagation, bedding components must comply with this procedure.

This test procedure is used from a marine safety perspective to evaluate the flammability of mattresses, upholstered bed bases, duvets, blankets, pillows, when exposed to smoldering cigarettes and a lit match-like flame as a source of ignition. To evaluate combustion behavior, the object needs to be tested at full scale with larger ignition sources.

Tests are performed in a test cabinet with calibrated airflow. Mattresses are placed directly on a test steel rig, while quilts, blankets, pillows and thin light mattresses are placed on a mineral wool slab placed in the test rig. Depending on the finish of the mattress, ignition sources are found on flat surfaces, band edges, quilted places, tufts. Two ignition sources are used: a cotton pad and a smoldering cigarette covered with a small gas flame. One hour after the start of the test, the sample is not allowed to smolder. The sample is not allowed to char in any horizontal direction more than 25mm across the full thickness of the product (except for materials thinner than 25mm) or from the edge of the cotton pad closest to its original position. Open flame ignition is also not allowed. The test specimen is exposed to a gas flame equivalent to the flame of a match for 20 seconds. It is not allowed to continue the flame for more than 150 seconds after removing the burner tube.

At the same time, equipment carried on ships registered under the flags of European Union countries must be tested and certified in accordance with the 96/98 EC marine equipment directive.

Our organization also provides fire test services for IMO FTPC Part 9: Bearing components, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
