CEN/TS 1187 Test Methods for Exposure to External Fire on Roofs
In the CEN/TS 1187 standard, which is a European standard, four test methods are defined to determine the external fire exposure performance of roofs. These methods for assessing the performance of roofs include:

- Test 1: Burning brands method
- Test 2: Burning brands and wind method
- Test 3: Burning marks, wind and additional radiant heat method
- Test 4: Two-stage method involving burning marks, wind and additional radiant heat
Tests 1, 2 and 3 are performed to evaluate fire spreading to the outer surface of the roof and the spread of fire within the roof, tests 1, 3 and 4 are fire penetration, and tests 1, 3 and 4 are to evaluate the production of flame droplets or debris falling from under the roof or from the exposed surface.
These four test methods do not follow any particular order, and each test method can be applied independently without the possibility of replacing or adding one to another.
For the purposes of this standard,
- Roof refers to any insulating layer or vapor barrier normally provided with supporting elements, including an adhesive, mechanically fixed or similar attachment, and a covering and sealing system that includes roof lights or other covers intended to provide a weatherproof surface for roof openings. .
- Material refers to a basic single substance or a homogeneously dispersed mixture of substances (eg metal, stone, wood, bitumen, concrete, mineral wool).
- Damaged material, including melting, refers to material that has been burned, charred, melted, or otherwise visually modified by heat.
- Damaged material not included in melting refers to material that has been burned or otherwise visually modified by heat, excluding melting.
- Burnt material refers to the material that is destroyed as a result of combustion or pyrolysis.
- Compound refers to the combination of materials that are generally considered a separate entity in building construction.
Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides test services for external fire exposure on roofs, within the scope of CEN / TS 1187 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
