ASTM E90 - 09 Airborne Sound Transmission Loss Tests of Building Partitions and Components

ASTM E90 - 09 Airborne Sound Transmission Loss Tests of Building Partitions and Components

In laboratories designed to meet the requirements of the ASTM E90-09 test method, only the significant path for sound transmission between rooms is intended to pass through the test specimen. This is generally not the case in buildings where there are many other paths for sound. Consequently, sound ratings obtained using this test method are not directly related to sound insulation in buildings; they represent an upper limit of what would be measured in a field test.

ASTM E90 - 09 Airborne Sound Transmission Loss Tests of Building Partitions and Components

This test method is not intended for field testing. Field tests are performed according to the test method ASTM E 336.

This test method covers the laboratory measurement of airborne sound transmission loss of building partitions such as all types of walls, operable partitions, floor-ceiling assemblies, doors, windows, roofs, panels and other space-dividing elements.

Standard : ASTM E90 – Standard Test Procedure for Laboratory Measurement of Airborne Sound Transmission Loss by Building Partitions and Elements

Scope : This test method encompasses laboratory measurements of airborne sound transmission loss through interior and exterior building partitions and elements. Data obtained from this test are used to calculate sound transmission class (STC) and outdoor-indoor transmission class (OITC) ratings according to ASTM E413 and ASTM E1332, respectively.

Applicable Products : Windows, doors, interior and exterior wall constructions, floor-to-ceiling systems, roof assemblies, curtain wall and storefront systems, skylights, office screens, and many more product types. The ASTM E1425 standard application specifies standard test dimensions for windows, doors, curtain walls, and skylight systems. Wall assemblies should be at least 8' wide and 8' high, but may need to be larger depending on the expected STC rating. Floor-to-ceiling and roof assemblies should be 10' wide and 12' long to fill the entire test frame.

Test procedure : Two adjacent echo chambers are arranged with a gap between them. The product or device is then installed on a test frame or infill wall placed in the gap between the test chambers. Care is taken to ensure that the only significant sound transmission path between the chambers is through the test sample or partition. An approximately diffused sound field is then generated in the source chamber. Sound incident on the test sample causes the sample to vibrate and create a sound field in the receiving chamber. The spatially and temporally averaged sound pressure levels in the two chambers are determined. Additionally, with the test sample in place, the sound absorption and background sound levels in the receiving chamber are determined. The sound pressure levels in the two chambers are then analyzed.

Result : The test report will include sound transmission loss values between 80 and 5000 Hertz, the STC rating, and the OITC rating. The ISO international rating (Rw) can also be calculated upon prior request. Sound transmission loss measurements at some lower frequencies can also be performed upon prior request.
