ISO 13061-1 Determination of Moisture Content of Wood for Physical and Mechanical Tests (Former ISO 3130 Standard)
The ISO 1431 Rubber, ISO 3130 Wood - Determination of moisture content for physical and mechanical tests standard, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), describes a method for determining the mass loss of a test piece by weighing it during drying to a constant mass. In this method, the mass loss after drying is calculated as a percentage of the mass of the test piece. However, this standard was later withdrawn and replaced by the ISO 13061-1 Physical and mechanical properties of wood - Test methods for small, clear wood samples - Part 1: Determination of moisture content for physical and mechanical tests.

This part of ISO 13061 describes oven-drying methods for determining the moisture content of wood for physical and mechanical testing on small, clean wood samples. For the purposes of this standard, the terms and definitions given in ISO 24294 apply. Moisture content refers to the amount of moisture contained in the wood and is expressed as a percentage of its oven-dried mass.
In general, the main purpose of the ISO 13061 standard is to specify test methods for small, clear wood samples and general requirements for determining the physical and mechanical properties of wood.
Moisture content is, in principle, one of the most important variables affecting the physical and mechanical properties of wood. The procedures described in the ISO 13061-1 standard are designed to obtain moisture content values with varying levels of precision to suit user needs. Moisture content is determined by weighing the test piece before and after drying to a constant mass. Moisture content is calculated as the mass loss after drying as a percentage of the test piece's mass. The moisture content of wood is expressed as a percentage of the test piece's oven-dried mass (oven-dried basis), so moisture content values can exceed 100 percent.
The equipment used in these tests includes:
- Balance: Based on a 10 g oven-dried test piece mass, the minimum readability of the balance should be determined by the required reporting accuracy level. For other oven-dried mass levels, the accuracy requirement should be scaled accordingly.
- Oven: A forced convection oven capable of maintaining a temperature of 103°C plus/minus 2°C throughout the drying chamber for the duration required to dry the sample to the tip should be used. The oven should be ventilated to ensure the removal of evaporated moisture.
- Desiccant: A vapor-tight container containing absorbent material (e.g., silica gel, calcium chloride) to keep the air dry.
Preparation of test pieces:
- Sampling and preparation of test pieces must comply with ISO 3129 standard.
- Test pieces should have a cross-section of at least 20 mm x 20 mm and a length of at least 20 mm along the fibre and should preferably be made in the shape of a rectangular prism.
- To determine the moisture content of test pieces prepared for other physical or mechanical tests, or to determine the relationship between moisture content and other properties of wood, test pieces prepared for other tests, or samples cut from them, should be used. The shape, dimensions, and method of taking the samples depend on the shape and dimensions of the pieces. For each test piece, at least one sample should be taken from the nearest point of interest (e.g., near the fracture site in destructive tests).
- After preparation, test pieces should be stored under conditions that will ensure that their moisture content remains unchanged prior to testing.
In general, the steps of the testing method are:
- The test piece is weighed to the selected sensitivity level according to this standard.
- The test piece is dried to constant mass at a temperature of 103°C plus or minus 2°C. Constant mass is considered to have been reached when the results of two successive weighings, at least 8 hours apart, do not differ by more than 0,2 percent from the mass of the test pieces.
- Test pieces from wood species containing volatile organic substances (such as resins, gums) in amounts exceeding the determination error should be vacuum dried.
- After cooling the test piece in a desiccator, it is weighed as quickly as possible to minimize moisture uptake. Weighing should be carried out to the accuracy level selected in accordance with this standard. For higher accuracy levels, the requirements of this standard must be adhered to.
- If moisture content must be determined to an accuracy of 0,1 percent or greater, weighing should be done using closed weighing vessels.
In short, ISO 13061-1 provides a standard procedure for determining the moisture content of small, clear wood samples used in physical and mechanical tests. Moisture content is defined as the mass of water in a wood sample expressed as a percentage of its oven-dried mass. This characteristic is critical because moisture significantly affects the density, strength, hardness, and dimensional stability of wood. This standard is part of the ISO 13061 series of standards, which covers test methods for evaluating various wood properties, such as density, flexural strength, and compressive strength.
The ISO 13061-1 standard applies to small, flawless wood samples used in laboratory tests to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of wood. This standard applies to:
- Construction: To ensure that wood used in structural applications (e.g., beams, columns) has a consistent moisture content to meet strength and stability requirements.
- Furniture production: Selecting wood with appropriate moisture content to prevent warping or cracking during production or use.
- Wood research: Providing reliable data to compare wood species or to study the effects of environmental conditions on wood properties.
- Quality control: Verifying that wood products comply with standards such as EN 384 or other industry requirements.
This standard is designed for small, clear samples that are generally free of knots or other defects to provide accurate and repeatable results in controlled testing environments.
Determining moisture content within the scope of the ISO 13061-1 standard is critical for the following reasons:
- Mechanical property accuracy: Moisture content affects the strength, hardness, and elasticity of wood. Accurate measurement provides reliable data for mechanical tests (e.g., bending or compression), as specified in other parts of ISO 13061.
- Dimensional stability: Wood expands and contracts with changes in moisture content, which can cause warping or cracking. This standard ensures that test specimens reflect real-world conditions, preventing unexpected behavior in finished products.
- Quality assurance: Consistent moisture content measurements ensure wood products perform as intended, enabling manufacturers to meet industry standards and customer expectations.
- Comparative analysis: This standard provides a universal method for researchers and engineers to compare wood species or evaluate the effect of treatments (e.g., drying or chemical impregnation) on moisture content.
- Compliance with legal regulations: Many standards, such as EN 384 for structural timber, reference moisture content as a key parameter. ISO 13061-1 ensures compliance with these requirements.
As a result, the ISO 13061-1 standard is a vital standard for determining the moisture content of wood, providing a reliable and repeatable method to support physical and mechanical testing. By providing accurate moisture content measurements, the standard enables industries to select appropriate wood materials, predict performance, and meet quality and regulatory requirements. Its global adoption and compatibility with other standards make it an indispensable tool for manufacturers, researchers, and engineers in the wood industry.
