EN 14934 Thermal Insulation and Lightweight Filling Products for Civil Engineering Applications - Factory Produced Products from Extruded Polystyrene Foam (XPS) - Specification

The European standard "EN 14934 Thermal insulation and lightweight filling products for civil engineering applications - Factory-made products made of extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) - Specification" describes the requirements for factory-made products made of extruded polystyrene foam used for frost insulation of roads, railways, traffic areas, lightweight filling for the reduction of horizontal and vertical earth pressure and other civil engineering applications.

The products are manufactured in the form of boards, which are also available with special edge and surface treatments (tongue and groove, shipboard). This standard also covers multilayer insulation boards. This standard describes the product characteristics and includes procedures for testing, conformity assessment, marking and labelling.

This standard does not specify the required level of a particular characteristic that a product must achieve to demonstrate fitness for purpose in a particular application. The classes and levels required for a particular application are found in regulations or non-conflicting standards.

For applications where heat resistance is required, products with a declared heat resistance of less than 0,25 m²K/W or a declared thermal conductivity of greater than 0,060 W/(m K) are not covered by this standard. This standard does not cover in-situ insulation products and products intended for use in the insulation of buildings, building equipment and industrial plants, or products intended for acoustic insulation purposes.

For the purposes of this standard, the following definitions apply in addition to the terms and definitions given in EN ISO 9229:

  • Extruded polystyrene foam refers to a rigid cellular plastic insulation material made from polystyrene or one of its copolymers, expanded and extruded with or without a skin and having a closed cell structure.
  • Board refers to a rigid or semi-rigid insulation product of rectangular shape and cross-section whose thickness is uniform and significantly smaller than other dimensions.
  • A level is a given value that is the upper or lower limit of a requirement. The level is given by the declared value of the associated attribute.
  • A class is a combination of two levels of the same feature where performance will degrade.

Product properties are evaluated according to this standard. To comply with this standard, products must meet the requirements of this standard. Information on additional properties is included in this annex (Annex E). A test result for a product property is the average of the values measured on the number of test samples given in the table in this standard.

For all applications, length and width are determined according to EN 822, length and width squareness according to EN 824 and flatness according to EN 825. No test result shall deviate from the declared values by more than the tolerances in the table entitled “Tolerances on length, width, squareness and flatness”.

The thickness shall be determined in accordance with standard EN 823. No test result shall deviate from the nominal thickness by more than the tolerances in the table entitled “Classes for thickness tolerances” for the labelled class.

Dimensional stability under the specified temperature and humidity conditions shall be determined in accordance with EN 1604. The test shall be carried out after 23 hours of storage at 2 degrees plus/minus 90 degrees and 5 percent plus/minus 48 percent relative humidity. Relative changes in length, width and thickness shall not exceed 2 percent. This test shall not be carried out when the more stringent test described is used.

Compressive stress or compressive strength at 10 percent deformation shall be determined in accordance with EN 826. Compressive stress or compressive strength at 10 percent deformation, whichever is greater, shall not be lower than the values given in the table titled “Compressive stress levels at 10 percent deformation or compressive strength” for any test result declared level.

Reaction to fire classification is determined according to EN 13501-1. Where regulated, sustained glow combustion is declared. In the absence of a European test method under development, the existing relevant national test method shall be applied.
