EN 13467 Thermal Insulation Products for Building Equipment and Industrial Plants - Determination of Dimensions, Squareness and Linearity of Preformed Pipe Insulation

The European standard “EN 13467 Thermal insulation products for building equipment and industrial plants - Determination of dimensions, squareness and linearity of preformed pipe insulation” defines equipment and procedures for determining the dimensions, squareness and linearity of preformed pipe insulation supplied in single pieces, half sections or segments. This standard is also applicable to thermal insulation products.

EN 13467 Thermal Insulation Products for Building Equipment and Industrial Plants - Determination of Dimensions, Squareness and Linearity of Preformed Pipe Insulation

For the purpose of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply:

  • Circumference refers to the circular length of the outer surface of the pipe insulation.
  • Outside diameter refers to the linear distance between two opposite points on the outer surface of the pipe insulation. It is measured from the center.
  • Inside diameter is the linear distance between two opposite points on the inside surface of the pipe insulation. Measured from the center.
  • Length refers to the linear dimension measured perpendicular to the circumference of the pipe insulation.
  • Thickness refers to the thickness of the insulation product measured perpendicularly between the outer and inner surface of the pipe insulation.
  • Thickness uniformity refers to the measured change in thickness. It is expressed as the difference between two extreme points of thickness measurements.
  • Deviation from squareness refers to the maximum distance from a line at the end of the product that exactly touches the product and is perpendicular to its major axis.
  • The deviation from linearity refers to the maximum distance between the flat reference surface on which the test specimen rests and the outer surface of the pipe insulation.
  • The circular segment chord is the length of the straight line connecting two end points of the curved surface of an insulation segment. Two chords are defined for an insulation product: the inner chord for the inner surface and the outer chord for the outer surface.

The principle in these tests is to determine the dimensions, squareness and linearity of a pipe insulation along its main axis or perpendicular to this axis.

These tests use a device to measure the circumference, outer and inner diameter, and thickness. The basic parts of this device include:

  • Metal tape graduated in millimeters for measuring circumference and diameter. Reading accuracy must be at least 1 mm for diameter and at least 3 mm for circumference.
  • Metal pipe supporting insulation with an outer diameter that prevents deformation of the product.
  • Rack supporting metal pipe.
  • Thickness gauge capable of applying a minimum load of 50 N plus/minus 0,5 N to a 0,05 mm diameter load distribution plate. The load must be such that no deformation of the product occurs during measurement. The reading accuracy must be at least 0,5 mm.
  • Conical mandrel graduated in 0,5 mm intervals. Reading accuracy must be at least 0,5 mm.
  • Caliper. Reading accuracy must be at least 0,1 mm.

The tests also use a length measuring device. This device has a metal tape graduated in millimeters and the reading accuracy must be at least 1 mm.

Preformed pipe sections are manufactured by bonding fireproof fiberglass fibers with thermosetting resin to cylindrical insulation sections. A slit along one wall allows the pipe section to be opened and placed over the pipe. Preformed pipe sections are a highly efficient thermal insulation product for use on pipes operating in the temperature range of 2 degrees to 450 degrees. Such products are designed for use in chilled water, hot water, steam and other service lines in commercial and institutional projects, as well as in industrial process and steam lines. Inorganic fibers will not cause or accelerate corrosion of any metal. They will not act as a catalyst for stress corrosion cracking of stainless steel unless soaked in chloride containing solutions.

Our organization, which has been trying to support businesses from every sector with its testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies carried out in a wide range for years, has a strong staff that closely follows the developments in the world in the field of science and technology and constantly improves itself. In this context, testing services are also provided to businesses in accordance with the standard “EN 13467 Thermal insulation products for building equipment and industrial facilities - Determination of dimensions, squareness and linearity of pre-formed pipe insulation”.
