ISO 9652 Masonry

ISO 9652 Masonry

The "ISO 9652 Masonry" standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), consists essentially of the following sections published under the same title:

ISO 9652 Masonry

  • Part 1: Design of unreinforced masonry by calculation
  • Part 2: Design of unreinforced masonry according to simple rules
  • Part 3: Design of reinforced masonry by calculation
  • Chapter 4: Testing methods
  • Chapter 5: Vocabulary

ISO 9652-1 Masonry - Part 1: Design of Unreinforced Masonry by Calculations

This standard describes rules for the design and construction of unreinforced masonry where calculations of loading and strength criteria are not required.

ISO 9652-2 Masonry - Part 2: Design of Unreinforced Masonry Using Simple Rules

This standard describes limited rules for the structural design and construction of unreinforced walls for which calculation of loading and strength criteria is not required. This standard is applicable to walls constructed with Group 1, 2 or 3 masonry units consisting of clay, calcium silicate, concrete (including autoclaved aerated concrete) and manufactured stone units. The scope of application of this standard is defined in the table given in the standard and is subject to the limitations of normative annex A. For walls designed by calculation, ISO 9652-1 is applicable.

The following are outside the scope of this standard:

  • Fundamentals shown in the standard
  • Free standing walls
  • Retaining walls other than basement walls
  • Basement walls subjected to hydrostatic pressure
  • Walls in seismic areas with expected ground accelerations above 1,0 m/s2

ISO 9652-3 Masonry - Part 3: Design of Reinforced Masonry by Calculations

This standard describes the rules for the design and construction of reinforced masonry by calculating loading and strength criteria.

ISO 9652-4 Masonry - Part 4: Test Methods

This standard describes reference methods for testing:

  • Compressive strength of wall units
  • Compressive strength of the wall
  • Flexural strength of the wall
  • Water absorption of clay units
  • Compressive strength of mortar

This applies to walls constructed with fired clay, calcium silicate, concrete (including autoclaved aerated concrete), natural stone or artificial stone units. These methods may be suitable for testing other wall materials, but have not been studied as reference tests in this regard.

The sampling method and number of samples should be stated in the test report and the sample should be selected to be representative of the lot to be tested. If the testing laboratory does not perform the sampling, this should be stated in the test report.

ISO 9652-5 Masonry - Part 5: Vocabulary

This standard describes the terms used in the structural design of unreinforced masonry. This standard applies to masonry in general, except for the following aspects of masonry:

  • Seismic design
  • Fire resistance
  • Thermal insulation (ISO 7345 standard)
  • Sound insulation

The design of masonry is assumed to be entrusted to structural or civil engineers or other suitably qualified persons for whose preparation this standard has been prepared as a guide.

For the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply:

  • A masonry unit is a pre-formed component designed for use in the construction of bonded masonry.
  • Calcium silicate unit is a unit consisting of a mixture of lime and mainly siliceous materials, shaped by pressing and combined with the effect of steam under pressure.
  • A clay unit is a unit composed predominantly of clay, loam, brick earth or shale, which is then fired to a high enough temperature to produce adequate ceramic structure.
  • Autoclaved aerated concrete unit is a unit consisting of a mixture of fine siliceous aggregate, hydraulic binder, other materials and an aeration agent.
  • Dense aggregate concrete unit is a unit consisting of a mixture of normal density aggregate, hydraulic binder and other materials. It is molded under pressure or vibration.
  • Lightweight aggregate concrete unit is a low density inorganic primary aggregate. The unit is made of a mixture of hydraulic binder and other materials and is molded under pressure or vibration.
  • A engineered stone unit is a unit created from natural stone by cutting or shaping it into a regular rectangular shape.
  • A manufactured stone unit is a unit created from aggregate and cementitious binder. It is designed to resemble natural stone and be used for similar purposes.

Our organization has a strong staff that closely follows the developments in the world in the field of science and technology and constantly improves itself. Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies provided for businesses in various sectors, there are also test services in accordance with the "ISO 9652 Masonry" standard.
