EN 14901-1 Ductile Iron Pipes, Fittings and Accessories - Requirements and Test Methods for Organic Coatings of Ductile Iron Fittings and Accessories - Part 1: Epoxy Coating (Heavy Duty)

The European standard “EN 14901-1 Ductile iron pipes, fittings and accessories - Requirements and test methods for organic coatings of ductile iron fittings and accessories - Part 1: Epoxy coating (heavy duty)” describes the requirements and test methods for factory-applied epoxy coatings (fusion-bonded powder or liquid two-component) used for corrosion protection of ductile iron fittings and accessories in accordance with EN 545, EN 598, EN 969, EN 12842 and EN 14525. The standards mentioned are mainly used for the following purposes:

EN 14901-1 Ductile Iron Pipes, Fittings and Accessories - Requirements and Test Methods for Organic Coatings of Ductile Iron Fittings and Accessories - Part 1: Epoxy Coating (Heavy Duty)

  • Transport of water (e.g. drinking water) at operating temperatures up to 50 degrees excluding frost
  • Wastewater transport at operating temperatures up to 45 degrees, excluding frost
  • Gas transport at operating temperatures up to 50 degrees
  • It is suitable for outdoor environments such as soil, water and atmospheres of all common corrosion loads characterized in the EN 545 standard.

For the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply:

  • Ductile iron is a type of cast iron used for pipes, fittings and accessories in which graphite is mainly present in spherical form. expresses
  • The fitting refers to the casting outside the pipe or accessory that allows the pipe network to be deviated, the direction or the hole to be changed. Flanged socket pieces, flanged tap pieces and collars are also classified as fittings.
  • Accessory refers to any casting other than a pipe or fitting used in a water pipeline. Examples of accessories are: valves, inspection chambers, manholes, unions for mechanical flexible connections, unions and locking rings for restricted flexible connections, pipe saddles for house connection, and adjustable flanges.
  • Component refers to the product defined above.
  • Adhesion refers to the force per unit area applied perpendicular to the surface required to separate the coating from its substrate.
  • Impact strength refers to the impact energy that a coating can withstand without damage under specified test conditions.
  • Indentation resistance refers to the resistance of a coating to penetration by a punch under defined test conditions.
  • Non-porosity refers to the absence of electrical breakdown in high voltage testing under defined test conditions.
  • Thermoplastic acid modified polyolefin powder material refers to TMPO powder polyolefin resin in which a significant amount of carbon hydrogen chemical bonds are replaced by carboxylic acid functional groups.
  • Thermoplastic acid modified polyolefin coating, TMPO coating refers to coating with factory-applied TMPO powder, sintering or flock spraying, or immersion in a fluidized bed or electrostatic spraying on preheated parts and then heating the parts.
  • Performance testing refers to testing that is performed once and repeated only after a change in the coating material supplier, coating material or relevant process application.
  • Routine testing refers to testing performed to control the manufacturing process at a frequency defined by the manufacturer of the coated ductile iron component.
  • Designated areas refer to areas of the casting where reduced coating performance is unavoidable due to joint tolerance restrictions, testing difficulties or due to being covered by a gasket, etc. For the purposes of this standard, these areas are defined as: joint areas, bolt holes, permitted markings, ribs and edges. Where deemed necessary, these areas may be protected by suitable additional corrosion protection measures during or after assembly. However, such measures are not part of this standard.
  • Average thickness refers to the arithmetic average of all thickness measurements taken on a coated product.
  • Localized thickness refers to the thickness measured at any point on a coated product.

The coating must comply with the technical requirements given in the standard. For example, the surface preparation must be designed to achieve the required performances specified in this standard. It is the responsibility of the manufacturer to implement a quality control procedure to demonstrate that the surface preparation technology is fit for purpose and to ensure the consistency of these performances.

Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, it also provides testing services defined in the standard “EN 14901-1 Ductile iron pipes, fittings and accessories - Requirements and test methods for organic coatings of ductile iron fittings and accessories - Part 1: Epoxy coating (heavy duty type)”.
