EN 1015 Test Methods for Masonry Mortar
The European standard “EN 1015 Test methods for masonry mortar” consists of sub-sections developed under the same title. Namely,

- The standard “EN 1015-1 Part 1: Determination of particle size distribution (by sieving analysis)” describes two test methods for determining the particle size distribution of dry-mixed or unhardened wet-mixed mortars. The wet sieving method is applicable to mortars containing normal weight aggregates, while the dry sieving method is applicable to mortars containing lightweight aggregates. This European standard does not cover the particle size distribution of individual aggregates, which must be determined in accordance with the test method described in the standard “EN 933 Tests on geometrical properties of aggregates”. It also does not cover mixtures containing fibres that cannot be removed before sieving.
- The standard "EN 1015-2 Part 2: Bulk sampling of mortars and preparation of test mortars" describes the methods for taking bulk samples from fresh mortar and preparing bulk test samples from it. This standard also specifies the procedure for producing test mortars from dry components and water.
- The standard “EN 1015-3 Part 3: Determination of the consistency of fresh mortar (by flow table)” describes a method for determining the consistency of freshly mixed mortars, including those containing mineral binders and both normal weight and lightweight aggregates, by means of the flow value.
- The standard “EN 1015-4 Part 4: Determination of the consistency of fresh mortar (by plunger penetration)” describes a method for determining the consistency of freshly mixed mortars, including those containing mineral binders and both dense and lightweight aggregates, by means of the piston penetration value.
- The standard “EN 1015-6 Part 6: Determination of bulk density of fresh mortar” describes a method for determining the bulk density of fresh mortars, including those containing mineral binders and both dense and lightweight aggregates.
- The standard “EN 1015-7 Part 7: Determination of air content of fresh mortar” describes two methods for determining the air content of fresh mortars, including those containing mineral binders and both dense and lightweight aggregates: Method A Pressure method and Method B Alcohol method. For air content less than 20 percent, Method A is valid. For air content of 20 percent or more, Method B is valid.
- The standard “EN 1015-8 Part 8: Determination of water retention capacity of fresh mortar” describes a method for determining the water retention capacity of freshly mixed mortars containing mineral binders and normal and lightweight aggregates when subjected to absorption. This standard is valid for masonry mortars, plastering mortars and render mortars.
- The standard “EN 1015-9 Part 9: Determination of the workable life and correction time of fresh mortar” describes methods for determining the workable life and correction time of freshly mixed mortars. Method A is a method for determining the workable life of general purpose masonry or plastering mortars, including those containing mineral binders and both dense and lightweight aggregates. Methods B and C are methods for determining the workable life and correction time for thin-bed mortars.
- The standard “EN 1015-10 Part 10: Determination of dry bulk density of hardened mortar” describes a method for determining the dry bulk density of hardened mortars. This standard is applicable to lightweight, general purpose and thin layer mortars using regular shaped samples.
- The standard "EN 1015-11 Part 11: Determination of flexural and compressive strength of hardened mortar" describes the method for determining the flexural and compressive strength of molded mortar samples. This standard is valid for cement/air lime mortars, air lime mortars, mortars with hydraulic binders and retarded mortars.
- The standard “EN 1015-12 Part 12: Determination of the adhesion strength of hardened plasters and plaster mortars to substrates” describes a method for determining the adhesion strength between plasters and mortars and a substrate.
- The standard “EN 1015-13 Part 13: Determination of dimensional stability of hardened mortars” describes a method for determining the dimensional stability (i.e. shrinkage and expansion movements) of mortars containing hydraulic mineral binders and normal and lightweight aggregates due to changes in moisture content. This method is valid for both normal and retarded masonry and plastering mortars. The shrinkage or expansion test consists of measuring the change in length of a mortar prism stored in air after removal from the mould under standardized ambient conditions, as a function of time.
- The standard “EN 1015-14 Part 14: Determination of durability of hardened masonry mortars (cement comprising more than 50 percent of the total binder mass)” describes a laboratory test method under harsh conditions for determining the durability of masonry mortars containing mineral binders and normal and lightweight aggregates, where the cement constitutes more than 50 percent of the total binder mass. This method can also be applied to mortar beds taken from existing structures.
- The standard “EN 1015-17 Part 17: Determination of the water-soluble chloride content of fresh mortars” describes a method for determining the water-soluble chloride content in fresh mortars.
- The standard “EN 1015-18 Part 18: Determination of the water absorption coefficient of hardened mortar due to capillary action” describes a method for determining the water absorption coefficient of hardened mortars containing mineral binders and normal and lightweight aggregates due to capillary action.
- The standard "EN 1015-19 Part 19: Determination of water vapour permeability of hardened plasters and mortars" describes the method for determining the steady-state water vapour permeability of plasters and mortars in the upper and lower part of the hygroscopic range according to the standard EN 998-1. This test method is applicable to mortars from which disc-shaped samples of uniform thickness between 10 mm and 30 mm can be made.
- The standard “EN 1015-21 Part 21: Determination of compatibility of single-coat plaster mortars with substrates” describes a test method for assessing the compatibility of single-coat plaster mortars with given backgrounds. The assessment is based on determining the adhesion strength and water permeability of the hardened plaster applied to the tested substrates after exposure to weathering.
