ASTM D2859-16 Standard Test Method for Ignition Properties of Finished Textile Flooring Materials

ASTM D2859-16 Standard Test Method for Ignition Properties of Finished Textile Flooring Materials

The ASTM D2859-16 standard published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) describes a test method for determining the flammability of finished textile flooring materials exposed to an ignition source under controlled laboratory conditions. Carpets and rugs for sale in the USA are required to comply with the test methods in 16 CFR 1630 or 16 CFR 1631 standards, as the case may be, in order to ensure consumer product safety. The acceptance criteria of these standards require that at least seven of eight individual samples of a particular carpet or rug pass the test.

ASTM D2859-16 Standard Test Method for Ignition Properties of Finished Textile Flooring Materials

The test method presented in the ASTM D2859-16 standard is very similar, but not identical, to the test methods described in the 16 CFR 1630 and CFR 1631 standards published by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). When compliance with one of these test methods is required, the ASTM D2859 test method does not ensure compliance with legal regulations.

The ASTM D2859 test method applies to all types of textile floor coverings, regardless of production method or whether they are made of natural or man-made fibers. It is possible to apply this test method to unfinished material, however, the results of such a test are not considered a satisfactory evaluation of a textile flooring material for end-consumer use.

This test method does not specify the use of a substrate material. If a backing material is used to evaluate the effect of a particular subfloor in conjunction with a particular floor covering, such a change should be reported.

During this test, the results are observed when the samples are in a horizontal plane. Different results may be obtained if the same material is tested on another plane.

The ASTM D2859 test method for testing finished textile flooring materials for flammability is widely used in the trade for acceptance testing. If a dispute arises during the use of this method for acceptance testing due to differences in values reported by the buyer and seller, the statistical deviation between the buyer's laboratory and the seller's laboratory is reported.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer standard testing services for the flammability properties of finished textile floor covering materials under the ASTM D2859-16 standard, utilizing a trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
