ASTM D4355/D4355M-21 Standard Test Method for Deterioration of Geotextiles by Exposure to Light, Moisture, and Heat in a Xenon Arc-Type Apparatus

The ASTM D4355/D4355M-21 standard, published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) , describes a test method for determining the degradation of tensile strength in geotextiles due to exposure to xenon arc radiation, moisture, and heat. These tests utilize a light and water exposure apparatus and a xenon arc light source.

ASTM D4355/D4355M-21 Standard Test Method for Deterioration of Geotextiles by Exposure to Light, Moisture, and Heat in a Xenon Arc-Type Apparatus

For the purposes of this standard, the term geotextile refers to a permeable textile material used in conjunction with a foundation, soil, rock or any other geotechnical engineering-related material that is an integral part of a man-made product, structure or system. For the definitions of other terms related to geotextiles, the ASTM D4439 standard is followed, and for the definitions of textile terms, the ASTM G113 standard is followed.

While performing this test, five samples of a geotextile for machine direction and cross machine direction are exposed in a xenon arc device for the specified times. The exposure consists of 120-minute cycles as follows:

  • At only 65 degrees plus/minus 3 degrees uninsulated black panel temperature and 50 percent plus/minus 5 minutes of light at 90 RH.
  • Then 30 minutes of light plus water spray.

After each exposure period, the samples are subjected to a shear or tear strip tensile test. The mean breaking strength in each direction is then compared with the mean breaking strength in each direction of the control samples. The percent retained strength is plotted as a graph against exposure time to generate a degradation curve for samples from all directions.

The purpose of this test method described is to cause property changes related to end-use conditions, including the effects of solar radiation, humidity, and heat. The exposure time used is not intended to simulate degradation caused by local weather events such as atmospheric pollution, biological attack and exposure to salt water.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer standard testing services under the ASTM D4355/D4355M-21 standard, using a xenon arc type apparatus, to assess the degradation of geotextiles due to exposure to light, moisture, and heat. This is made possible by our trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
