The crease-proof or permanent press or durable press is a finishing method for textiles that prevents creasing and creasing and gives things a better appearance. Many cellulosic fabrics and blends of cellulose-rich fabrics are prone to wrinkling. The durable press coating makes them dimensionally stable and wrinkle-free.
Wrinkle-resistant finishes were developed in the early 20th century as a way to deal with fabrics from cotton, rayon, and linen that were found to crease easily and retain creases. These processes have a lasting effect on the fabric. Synthetics such as polyester, nylon, acrylic and olefin have a natural resistance to wrinkles and have greater stability because they do not absorb water efficiently. These fabrics are textiles that have been treated to resist external stress and retain their shape. Clothes made from this fabric do not need to be ironed.
In the textile industry, crosslinking is the chemical process to produce wrinkle resistant textiles. Wrinkle resistance is achieved by cross-linking cellulose chains to stop molecules from moving when in contact with water or other environmental stresses.
The cotton cellulose polymer contains three distinct regions: the crystalline region, the amorphous region, and an intermediate region between them. While the cellulose chains in the crystalline region are in close arrangement and limit their mobility, the chains in the amorphous and intermediate regions become more susceptible to breakage by connecting to each other with weaker bonds. There are two types of crosslinkers, the chemicals that bind the cellulose chains together. One of them only binds cellulose chains, while the other self-polymerizes resins.
Due to the increasing demand for 100 percent cotton fabrics today, durable presses are used in these garments. Generally, cotton fibers are spun into yarn, woven into fabric and then dyed and treated with a crosslinking resin in the final step. Applications of formaldehyde-based reagents used to create these garments are now raising concerns for human health and the environment around the world.
