JIS L 1902 Antimicrobial Test - Fabrics

The JIS L 1902 standard, developed by the Japanese Industrial Standards Organization (JIS), defines an antimicrobial product test method for determining antibacterial activity and effectiveness on textiles. This standard is applied around the world in terms of testing antimicrobial additives. The test method described is frequently used for fabrics and textiles used in bedding, furniture and clothing.

The test options described in this standard include a qualitative and quantitative component. In the qualitative test method, antimicrobial activity is a qualitative determination of growth on a textile. In the quantitative test method, the data is quantitative. The quantitative approach requires an additional incubation time for bacteria determination by coating. In addition, microbial concentrations are standardized and nutrients are provided to the bacteria during the incubation period. This provides ample opportunity for them to grow if the test fabrics are not sufficiently antimicrobial.

Generally, quantitative methods are preferred against two common bacteria, Staph and Kleb. Other microorganisms are also used as alternatives depending on customer or regulatory requirements. In fact, the quantitative testing method is similar to the antimicrobial textile testing method defined in the AATCC 100 standard developed by the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC). The surface of a material is tested after a short incubation period. As a result, this method is considered ideal for high throughput, rapid turnaround, and large-volume testing. Furthermore, due to the incubation conditions of the test, the JIS L 1902 standard is considered one of the most rigorous methods for testing antimicrobial performance, providing both reasonable repeat analysis for test statistics and resistance testing of the treated test sample.

However, it is difficult to test hydrophobic test fabrics with this test method. On the other hand, a weakness of the JIS L 1902 standard is that this test method is not generally accepted by the American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for health claims.

Our organization also provides antimicrobial testing services for fabrics within the scope of JIS L 1902 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
