SOR/2016-185 Tent Regulation

SOR/2016-185 Tent Regulation

The SOR/2016-185 Tent Regulation, published under the Canadian Consumer Product Safety Act, includes a test method to address the flammability hazards of materials and products available on the market and to eliminate or reduce the use of flame retardants while protecting consumers from the risk of tent fires. The Canadian Product Safety Laboratory has conducted preliminary testing using a range of common tent materials to help develop this standard.

SOR/2016-185 Tent Regulation

The latest update to this legislation covers consumer tents and tent trailers, excluding tents for indoor use only. Play tents are essentially made of flexible materials such as fabric and vinyl, in accordance with "ISO 8124-2 Safety of toys - Part 2: Flammability" and "EN 71-2 Safety of toys - Part 2: Flammability" and toy tents, puppet theaters, curtains and play tunnels are defined as toys that at least partially enclose a child, but are not open canopies.

Accepted options for assessing the flammability of these products include:

  • Flammability requirements for soft toys in toy regulations
  • Flammability requirements for toys intended for use by a child in ISO 8124-2 and EN 71-2 standards
