In the TS 4126 ISO 5398 standard, which is a European standard and published by the International Standards Organization (ISO), test methods for the chemical determination of chromic oxide content in leather materials are explained.

Essentially, the ISO 5398 standard consists of four sections under the main heading, “Leather – Chemical determination of chromic oxide content.” Each of these sections describes appropriate test methods for determining the chromic oxide content in leather. Different techniques are defined to reflect variations in industrial application, compared to the more sensitive analytical equipment available for advanced laboratories.
These four test methods are:
The ISO 5398-1 standard describes a test method for the determination of chromium in an aqueous solution obtained from leather. This test method is an assay method for total chromium in leather, not compound specific or oxidation state specific. This method describes the determination of chromium by iodometric titration and is applied to chrome-tanned leathers expected to have a chromic oxide content of more than 0,3 percent. This standard describes two alternative methods for obtaining chromium in a suitable solution. It is appropriate to use both methods.
ISO 5398-2 standard describes the determination of chromium by colorimetric methods. This test method is applicable to leathers expected to have a chromic oxide content greater than 0,05%. This method is an analytical method for total chromium in the leather, not specific to the compound or oxidation state. For the purposes of this standard, the amount of chromic oxide in the leather is determined by this method and reported as chromic oxide. Chromic oxide content is expressed as a percentage by mass based on dry matter.
The ISO 5398-3 standard describes a test method for the determination of chromium in an aqueous solution obtained from leather. This test method is an analysis method for total chromium in leather, not compound specific or oxidation state specific. This method describes the determination of chromium by atomic absorption spectrometry and is applied to leathers expected to have a chromic oxide content of more than 5 mg/kg. Two techniques are presented for the preparation of the solution to be analyzed. In case of disagreement, the wet oxidation technique is used. For the purposes of this standard, the amount of chromic oxide in leather is determined by this method and reported as chromic oxide. Chromic oxide content is expressed in milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) based on dry matter.
The ISO 5398-4 standard describes a method for the determination of chromium in an aqueous solution obtained from leather. This is an analysis method for total chromium in leather, not compound specific or oxidation state specific. This method describes the determination of chromium by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry and is applied to leathers expected to have a chromic oxide content of more than 1 mg/kg. Two techniques are presented for the preparation of the solution to be analyzed. In case of disagreement, the wet oxidation technique is used. Inductively coupled plasma optical (atomic) emission spectrometry is an analytical technique used for the detection of chemical elements.
Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides test services for the chemical determination of chromic oxide content in leather, within the scope of TS 4126 ISO 5398 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
