TOG Thermal Overall Grade Test

TOG Thermal Overall Grade Test

TOG is a unit of measurement generally used in the textile industry to calculate the thermal insulation of a product. In general, the higher the TOG rating, the warmer the product will hold.

TOG Thermal Overall Grade Test

Here are a few TOG values:

  • 0,2 TOG: Ideal for room temperatures between 24-27 degrees
  • 1.0 TOG: Ideal for room temperatures between 20-24 degrees
  • 2.5 TOG: Ideal for room temperatures between 16-20 degrees
  • 3.5 TOG: Ideal for room temperatures below 16 degrees

A poor quality duvet or sleeping bag will quickly lose their TOG rating when washed. Therefore, a TOG rating is at best a rough guide to how hot it will keep. However, the TOG rating by itself does not say anything definitive about the quality of a quilt.

In short, the TOG rating describes the temperature or thermal resistance of a product and is commonly used.

The following standard developed by the British Standards Institute (BIS) is generally based on: BS 4745 Determination of thermal resistance of textiles - Two-plate method: constant pressure procedure, two-plate method: fixed opening procedure and single-plate method. Generally, sleep involvements and quilts are subjected to TOG test in terms of compliance with the BS 4745 standard. A 0,5 TOG margin of error is allowed on the upper side when performing this test.

The BS 4745 standard defines three methods for determining the resistance of fabrics, fabric sets, or fiber clusters in sheet form to heat conduction through them at steady state: two-plate method: constant pressure procedure, two-plate method: constant unwinding procedure and single-plate method. These methods are suitable for materials with a thermal resistance of up to about 0,2 m2 K/W and a thickness of up to 20 mm.

Any of the two-plate methods is suitable for materials whose exterior is protected from ambient air during use (for example, a blanket when covered with a bedspread). The single plate method is suitable for materials whose outer surfaces are exposed to ambient air during use (eg bedding and outerwear).

Our organization also provides TOG, thermal overall grade testing services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
