The EN ISO 12947-2 standard, based on a European standard and reissued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), defines a test method for determining sample degradation through periodic inspection. This standard applies to all textile fabrics, including non-woven fabrics, except those where the indicator exhibits low wear life and final performance. This standard does not apply to coated fabrics (including laminated fabrics). Different test methods, as outlined in the ISO 5470 standard, are used to determine the wear behavior of the uncoated surface of a coated fabric.
Clothing textiles, furniture fabrics, bedding textiles, work clothes and similar textiles are exposed to various types of wear when used. Abrasion, for example, eventually causes the textile to tear and deteriorate. Knowing the wear characteristics of a material is helpful in assessing whether the material is sufficiently wear resistant for its intended use.
The test method described in the EN ISO 12947-2 standard aims to analyze how durable a textile material is, that is, its abrasion resistance for different materials. Different applications for textile materials may require different high abrasion resistance. Therefore, it is important to have information about the wear of the material before starting the test.
Martindale device is used for testing. At least three small circular samples, approximately 38 mm in diameter, are placed in a sample holder with a standard foam backing. The sample is abraded in a circular area under load against a wool fabric with a standard felt on the back. The wear movement is performed according to a certain pattern. The load is 9 kPa or 12 kPa, depending on the area of use. Test samples are inspected at intervals described in the standard. The wear end point is different depending on the nature of the material, i.e. woven, knitwear, nonwoven or pile material. The endpoint could be thread breakage, perforation, weight loss, frayed feathers or various appearance changes.
