EN 1049-2 Textiles - Woven Fabrics - Construction - Analysis Methods - Part 2: Determination of Yarns Per Unit Length

A European standard, EN 1049-2, describes test methods for determining the number of threads per unit length of woven fabrics.

EN 1049-2 Textiles - Woven Fabrics - Construction - Analysis Methods - Part 2: Determination of Yarns Per Unit Length

This standard contains three test methods for determining the number of threads per centimeter, any of which can be used, depending on the character of the fabric. The principles in these test methods are as follows:

  • Method A: Cut a section of fabric of the specified size and count the thread count. The digits to be counted are preferably short, 1 or 2 cm is appropriate.
  • Method B: Determine the visible thread count within the aperture of a defined counting glass.
  • Method C: The number of threads per centimeter of fabric is determined with the aid of a cross thread counter.

In cases where the threads per centimeter is low, the results are expressed in threads per decimetre. Methods using parallel line gratings and conical line gratings are included in the standard annex for information purposes. However, these methods are not considered accurate enough to be used as standard test methods. It is still used to give rough and ready estimates for routine testing.

While preparing the EN 1049-2 standard, the following standard published by the International Standards Organization (ISO) was taken as a basis: ISO 7211-2 Textile - Woven fabrics - Construction - Analysis methods - Part 2: Determination of the number of threads per unit length.

The number of warp threads per unit length in the fabric width direction gives the warp density. On the other hand, the number of weft threads per unit length in the fabric length direction gives the weft density. Yarn count per unit length analyzes are performed on the loom, raw fabrics and processed fabrics. The higher the thread density, the more durable the fabric. These fabrics are tougher and more stable, their weight is higher and yarn slippage is lower.

Our organization, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it has given for businesses in various sectors, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, within the scope of EN 1049-2 standard, the test for determining the number of yarns per unit length among the construction analysis methods of woven fabrics. also provides services.
