ASTM D4533-11 Standard Test Method for Trapezoidal Tear Strength of Geotextiles

ASTM D4533-11 Standard Test Method for Trapezoidal Tear Strength of Geotextiles

The ASTM D4533-11 standard, published by the American Testing and Materials Organization (ASTM), defines an index test method used to determine the force required for a tear to persist or propagate in woven or non-woven geotextiles using the trapezoidal method. While this test method is useful for quality control and acceptance testing, the trapezoidal tear test does not provide all the information required for all design applications and other test methods are recommended.

ASTM D4533-11 Standard Test Method for Trapezoidal Tear Strength of Geotextiles

This test method applies to most geotextiles, including woven fabrics, nonwovens, layered fabrics, knit fabrics, and felts used for geotextile applications.

The ASTM D4533-11 standard includes determining the force required to continue to propagate a tear in woven or non-woven geotextiles. The samples are 7 cm wide and 20 cm long and are marked with a trapezoid. A 1.5 cm long pre-cut is made on the sample. The sample is clamped along the marked trapezoid and then tensioned at a constant crosshead speed. The maximum force is recorded and reported as tear strength.

Briefly, the ASTM D4533 trapezoidal tear method is a test that generates tension along a reasonably defined path such that the tear spreads across the width of the specimen. The trapezoidal tear strength for woven fabrics is primarily determined by the properties of the yarns held in the grippers. The trapezoidal tear strength method is a very useful method for estimating the relative tear strength of different fabrics or different directions in the same fabric.

The trapezoidal test is useful for quality control and acceptance testing but is not considered suitable for design applications.

During the test, an isosceles triangle is marked on a 200 x 76 mm rectangular test specimen. The 2 non-parallel edges are held by parallel flat face clamps and the required strain rate is applied. In this way a continuous tear is propagated and the maximum force is recorded.

Our organization also provides standard testing services for the trapezoidal tear strength of geotextiles within the scope of ASTM D4533-11 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
