TS 251 Woven Fabrics - Determination of Unit Length and Unit Area Mass

The TS 251 standard, developed by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE), defines test methods for determining the mass per unit length and mass per unit area of woven fabrics. This standard was prepared based on the following standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO): ISO 3801 Textiles - Woven fabrics - Determination of mass per unit length and mass per unit area.

TS 251 Woven Fabrics - Determination of Unit Length and Unit Area Mass

For some fabrics, mass per unit length and mass per unit area are simply related to the width of the fabric. For some fabrics, however, differences in structure introduce an important distinction between mass per unit length and mass per unit area. The test methods are applied to woven fabrics made in full width or folded in the middle. It is also applied to the determination of the fabric mass of whole pieces as well as the sample length.

Briefly, the TS 152 standard provides methods for determining the following two properties of woven fabrics conditioned in standard atmosphere for testing:

  • Mass per unit length
  • Mass per unit area

Mass per unit length means that the mass of an object is directly proportional to its length. In order to meet this criterion, the mass of that material must be equally distributed in all directions. Mass per unit length is one of the main criteria of quality in woven fabrics. In other words, mass per unit length is the linear density of a one-dimensional substance such as thread. Its practical application is to measure the weight of yarns and fabrics in the textile industry.

The mass per unit area method is used for all types of textile materials such as knitted, woven and nonwoven materials or fabrics with or without coating and in several layers or in one piece. A textile material is usually specified by its surface weight. To check this, the mass per surface unit area is calculated.

Our organization also provides testing services for the determination of unit length and unit area mass of woven fabrics, within the scope of TS 251 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
