EN 17137 Textiles - Determination of Content of Compounds Based on Chlorobenzenes and Chlorotoluenes

EN 17137, a European standard, describes an analysis method for the determination of chlorobenzenes and chlorotoluene content in textile products consisting of components such as outer fabric, lining, plastic zippers, plastic buttons, labels, threads and appliqués. This method of analysis is valid for the mass fraction of 0,1 mg/kg to 10 mg/kg per single isomer. Both higher and lower concentrations are determined if the mass of the sample is chosen accordingly, or if appropriate dilutions are made during analysis.

When performing the test, the cut test sample is extracted by ultrasonication in a sealed container using dichloromethane. Blocking particles and fibers are removed by filtration through membrane filters. Without additional purification, the extract is analyzed to determine the content of chlorobenzenes and chlorotoluenes by gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method with selected ion mode using an internal standard for quantification.

Chlorobenzenes and chlorotoluenes are used as solvents, dye carriers, biocides and chemical intermediates. These chemicals are persistent and bioaccumulate. In the human body, it generally affects the liver, thyroid and central nervous system. Hexachlorobenzene, the most toxic and persistent chemical of this group, is also a hormone disruptor. Some chlorobenzenes and toluenes are very toxic to aquatic organisms.

Occupational exposure occurs primarily through inhalation of chemicals. For consumers, the biggest source of exposure to these chemicals is foods that contain oils of animal origin. Many chlorobenzenes are already legally restricted.

Chlorobenzenes and chlorotoluenes are mainly used as intermediates and solvents in the synthesis of other chemicals. It is especially used as a dye carrier in the dyeing of polyester and polyester blends and in dyeing polyester accessories such as buttons, or as an equalizer for dyeing, printing and coating textile and leather materials including fiber, yarn and fabrics. Textile and leather materials and adhesive formulations that also act as smoothing agents, deodorizers, fumigants, degreasers and pesticides contain these compounds.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services for the determination of the content of chlorobenzenes and chlorotoluene-based compounds in textile products, within the scope of EN 17137 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
