ASTM D4632-08 Standard Test Method for Shear Load and Elongation of Geotextiles

ASTM D4632-08 Standard Test Method for Shear Load and Elongation of Geotextiles

The ASTM D4632-08 standard, published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), defines a test method for determining the tensile strength (holding strength) and elongation (holding elongation) of geotextiles using the grip test method. This test method is not considered suitable for knitted fabrics, and alternative test methods are recommended. While this test method is useful for quality control and acceptance testing of a given fabric structure, the results can only be used comparatively between fabrics with very similar structures. This is because each different fabric structure performs uniquely and characteristically in this test . Grip test methods do not provide all the information required for all design applications, and other test methods are recommended.

ASTM D4632-08 Standard Test Method for Shear Load and Elongation of Geotextiles

Procedures for measuring the breaking load and elongation by the scoop method in both the dry and wet condition are included in this standard, however, the test is normally performed in the dry condition unless specified otherwise in an agreement or specification.

Generally speaking, this test method is a grip test applied to measure the breaking load and elongation of geotextiles. This expression means that the grip is holding the fabric in the middle of the sample. This test is very similar to the test method defined in the ASTM D5034 standard, which is the grip test for normal textile samples. This test is used only for woven fabrics and not for knitted textiles or non-woven materials.

Briefly, the test method described in the ASTM D4632 standard is an index test. This method is applied when it is desired to determine the properties.

The grip method is a modified tensile test in which the sample is tensioned at a constant crosshead velocity and continued until the sample breaks. The sample size is 10 cm wide and 20 cm long. The edge effects are eliminated by clamping the sample with 3 cm wide and 5 cm long clamps, and in this way the sample is left unclamped at the edges.

Our organization also provides standard testing services for breaking load and elongation of geotextiles, within the scope of ASTM D4632-08 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
