The UNI 5114 standard, developed by the Italian Standardization Organization (UNI), defines test methods for determining the air mass and mass per unit length of fabrics, including those produced with textured yarns, non-woven fabrics and knitwear, after relaxation and conditioning processes in a normal test atmosphere.

Fabric is a man-made material that has been used since ancient times and has numerous uses today. The main distinguishing feature of fabrics is whether the fabric is woven or non-woven. This feature is all about the way the fabric is created.
Woven fabrics are the more traditional one. It is produced by weaving a large number of threads perpendicular to each other. Threads that run vertically through the fabric are warp threads, and threads that run horizontally are weft threads. During weaving, these threads pass under and over each other. The strength of the woven fabric depends on the type of yarn or yarn used. The yarn is obtained from a variety of fibers and makes the woven fabric very versatile.
Non-woven fabrics are produced with long fibers bonded together using some type of heat, chemical or mechanical process. There is no weaving or manual construction. Non-woven fabrics have many different uses. It can act as liquid repellency, stretching, thermal insulation and bacterial barrier. In most cases, woven fabrics are more durable and stronger than non-woven fabrics. The durability of non-woven fabrics depends entirely on how they are produced. For example, a disposable plastic bag and surgical gown are examples of nonwoven materials.
For some fabrics, mass per unit length and mass per unit area are simply related to the width of the fabric. However, for some fabrics, differences in structure create an important distinction between mass per unit length and mass per unit area. The test methods described in the UNI 5114 standard are applied to woven fabrics and non-woven fabrics and enable the determination of the fabric mass of whole pieces as well as the sample length.
Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer testing services for determining the air mass and overall mass per unit length of fabrics and nonwovens under the UNI 5114 standard, utilizing a trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
