ASTM D737-18 Standard Test Method for Air Permeability of Textile Fabrics

ASTM D737-18 Standard Test Method for Air Permeability of Textile Fabrics

In the ASTM D737-18 standard published by the American Testing and Materials Organization (ASTM), a test method is defined that includes the measurement of air permeability of textile fabrics. This test method applies to most types of fabrics, including woven fabrics, non-woven fabrics, air cushion fabrics, blankets, pile fabrics, knit fabrics, and layered fabrics. These fabrics may be untreated, substantially sized, coated, resin-treated or otherwise treated.

ASTM D737-18 Standard Test Method for Air Permeability of Textile Fabrics

Air permeability is the volume of air that passes through a fabric under pressure. Two types of air permeability testers are used for textile products: Frazier air permeability tester and Shirley air permeability tester. Frazier air permeability tester is used in the test method described in the ASTM D737 standard. This instrument is a worldwide used air permeability tester for quality control, research, development, performance and purchasing specifications.

The standard test method for air permeability is the air permeability of textile fabrics, that is, the velocity of air flow passing vertically through a known area under a predetermined air pressure difference between two surfaces of a material.

Air permeability is an important factor in the performance of textile materials such as gas filter, airbag fabrics, clothes, mosquito nets, parachutes, sails, awnings and vacuum cleaners. Air permeability provides an indication of the breathability of weatherproof and rainproof fabrics.

Production factors and finishing techniques cause a change in the length of the air flow paths through a fabric, thus having an effect on air permeability. Fabrics with different surface textures on both sides have a different air permeability depending on the air flow direction.

The air flow is from the side with high air pressure through the fabric to the side with low air pressure. The air permeability of the fabric is determined from this air flow rate.

Our organization also provides standard testing services for the air permeability of textile fabrics within the scope of ASTM D737-18 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
