Requirements for Plastic Materials No. 2020/1245

Requirements for Plastic Materials No. 2020/1245

The regulation on plastic materials and substances intended to come into contact with food, no. 10/2011, published in the European Union countries, has been replaced by the regulation of requirements for plastic materials, numbered 2020/2020, published in 1245.

Requirements for Plastic Materials No. 2020/1245

The change made is as follows:

  • Article 6(3)(a) has been amended. This change concerns salts of permitted acids, phenols or alcohols.
  • Annex I Substances, Annex II Restrictions on materials and articles, Annex IV Declaration of Conformity and Annex V Conformity test annexes have been amended in accordance with the Annex of the new regulation.

Plastic materials and articles that comply with regulation 10/2011, valid before the entry into force of these changes, and placed on the market before 23 March 2021, are allowed to continue to be placed on the market until 23 September 2022 and remain on the market until stocks run out.

Plastic materials are featured in many projects thanks to their versatility, which is a valuable feature. The mechanical properties of these materials are highly dependent on temperature and tend to deform when subjected to stress. However, numerous possible additives such as glass fiber or carbon fiber are used to reduce the effect of their defects.

The main properties of plastic materials can be listed as follows: high workability, low specific gravity, low electrical and thermal conductivity, resistance to corrosion, low coefficient of friction, chemical resistance and excellent aesthetic properties. However, the large number of plastic materials currently on the market makes it difficult to determine the most suitable one. Especially in the food industry. When it comes to food, the properties and use of plastic materials that will come into contact with food are more important.

Food comes into contact with numerous materials and items during production, processing, storage, preparation, and serving, before its final consumption. Materials that come into contact with food are either designed to come into contact with food, are already in contact with food, or could reasonably come into contact with food or transfer their components to food under normal or foreseeable use. Examples include containers for transporting food, machinery for processing food, packaging materials, and kitchen utensils and tableware.

Our organization, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, also provides testing services for the requirements for plastic materials numbered 2020/1245, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
