The standard “MAN M 3150-3 Surface quality - Assessment zones - Truck”, developed by the automotive company MAN, describes a procedure for assessing the assessment zones of trucks in terms of surface quality.

Essentially, the MAN M 3150 series of standards includes requirements for the uniform assessment of the surface quality of cavities, coatings as well as the structure and colour matching on MAN commercial vehicles (cabin, cabin add-on parts and chassis). In short, this series of standards is designed to enable the uniform assessment of the surface quality and the structure and colour matching of coatings on MAN commercial vehicles. In general, this standard is only valid for trucks. Special regulations may apply for military vehicles.
This series of standards applies to both in-house parts and purchased parts, regardless of the quality and type of component material.
The evaluation zones in the general vehicle are defined in this part of the M 3150 series of standards. The requirements for the relevant evaluation zones are defined in the M 3150-1, M 3150-2, M 3150-5, M 3150-7 and M 3150-8 standards.
The evaluation zones are generally explained in the table provided in the standard as follows:
The evaluation zones are defined with the help of this table.
There are no requirements regarding the visual appearance of the surface on light/dark grey surfaces. However, it must be ensured that these surfaces have the appropriate surface properties for the intended function and installation. In the lower hull area, it is only possible to apply a filler or top coat in accordance with the M 3300-1 standard. This depends on the process applied in the relevant plant. In the lower hull area, the paint coating serves only the purpose of corrosion protection and does not have to comply with any visual property requirements. In the case of a lower hull area with a top coat, the colorimetric criteria do not apply to this area.
In practice, deviations in the area definition may occur at individual minor locations for design and application reasons (e.g. in the channel for the mounting connection on the cabin rear wall or in the spray shadow in the door hinge area). These locations are examined in individual cases by the responsible quality department together with the relevant technical department and the painting process is documented and released if no improvement is possible. Assessment zone 3 applies to the chassis in general. Questions regarding the zone classification should be directed either to the factory product inspectors or to the standardization department.
Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services defined in the “MAN M 3150-3 Surface quality - Evaluation zones - Truck” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
