EN ISO 75-2 Plastics - Determination of Deflection Temperature Under Load - Part 2: Plastics and Ebonite

The EN ISO 75-2 standard, developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), defines three test methods for determining the bending temperature of plastics and ebonite under load, using different values of constant bending stress. The plastics tested here include filled plastics and fiber-reinforced plastics with fiber lengths up to 7,5 mm before processing.

The three test methods included in the standard are:

  • Method A using a bending stress of 1,80 Mpa
  • Method B using a bending stress of 0,45 Mpa
  • Method C using a bending stress of 8,00 Mpa

Ebonite is also a type of plastic. The plastic material obtained by processing one hundred parts of rubber with thirty-two parts of sulfur is called ebonite. In other words, ebonite is the form of rubber mixed with sulfur. Different types of ebonite are obtained by mixing other substances into this compound. Ebonite is electrically impermeable and with this feature, it is used as an insulator in electric vehicles. It is also resistant to cold and heat.

The standard deviation used to determine the deflection temperature under load corresponds to a bending-strain increase defined in the EN ISO 75-2 standard. The initial bending strain resulting from loading the specimen at room temperature is neither specified nor measured in this standard. The ratio of this flexural strain increase to the initial flexural stress depends on the modulus of elasticity of the material under test at room temperature. Therefore, this method is only suitable for comparing the deflection temperatures of materials with similar room temperature elastic properties.

In fact, the EN ISO 75 standard consists of three parts under the heading "Plastics - Determination of deflection temperature under load":

  • EN ISO 75-1 Part 1: General test method
  • EN ISO 75-2 Part 2: Plastics and ebonite
  • EN ISO 75-3 Part 3: High strength thermoset laminates and long fiber reinforced plastics

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides plastics and ebonite testing services for the determination of the deflection temperature of plastics under load, within the scope of EN ISO 75-2 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment. .
