AISI 321 Stainless Steel Grade
Developed by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), AISI 321 is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel widely recognized for its excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion and superior performance in high-temperature environments. Essentially, it is a modified version of AISI 304 with the addition of titanium to prevent carbide precipitation during welding or exposure to high temperatures.

AISI 321 belongs to the 300 series of austenitic stainless steels. The addition of titanium (typically at least 5 times the carbon content, up to 0,70%) forms titanium carbides by bonding with carbon and prevents the formation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries. This stabilization ensures resistance to sensitization and intergranular corrosion in the temperature range of 425-850 degrees.
In annealed conditions, it offers corrosion resistance similar to AISI 304, but performs superiorly in oxidative environments with intermittent use up to 900 degrees or continuous use up to 925 degrees. The material is non-magnetic in the annealed state, but may become slightly magnetic after cold working.
Equivalent standards include:
- EN 1.4541, also known as X6CrNiTi18-10, is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel according to European standards (EN 10088). In the American system, it is the direct equivalent of AISI 321. The addition of titanium stabilizes the material against sensitization and intergranular corrosion, especially after exposure to temperatures in the 425-850 degree range, making it superior to standard 1.4301 (AISI 304) for welded or high-temperature applications.
- UNS S32100, commonly known as AISI 321, is the unified numbering system (UNS) designation for titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel. This grade is designed for improved resistance to intergranular corrosion and excellent performance in high-temperature applications up to approximately 900 degrees. The addition of titanium stabilizes the material, preferably forming titanium carbides, and prevents chromium depletion at grain boundaries during welding or prolonged heat exposure. UNS S30400 provides comparable corrosion resistance to AISI 304 but possesses superior high-temperature strength and exfoliation resistance. The material is non-magnetic in the annealed state and becomes slightly magnetic after cold working.
- JIS SUS321 is the Japanese industry standard designation for titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel. This grade is specifically designed for high-temperature service and resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding or exposure to high temperatures (range 400-800 degrees). The addition of titanium prevents chromium carbide precipitation and sensitization by forming stable carbides. SUS321 offers excellent oxidation resistance up to 900 degrees in intermittent use and retains good mechanical properties at high temperatures. It is non-magnetic in the annealed state and is widely used in Japan and Asia for demanding thermal applications. Common forms include plates, sheets, tubes, and bars.
- BS 321S31 is the British standard designation for titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel (BS 1449 and BS 970 standards). This grade incorporates titanium to provide excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion after exposure to high temperatures (425-850 degrees) or welding, making it superior to unstabilized grades such as 304/304L in these conditions. It offers good oxidation resistance and high creep resistance in intermittent service conditions up to 900 degrees, while retaining its non-magnetic properties in the annealed state.
The composition of AISI 321 conforms to the “ASTM A240/A240M Standard specification for chrome and chrome-nickel stainless steel sheet, plate and strip for pressure vessels and general applications” standard.
AISI 321 is ideal for high-temperature and corrosive environments, including:
- Aircraft exhaust manifolds and chimneys
- Automotive exhaust systems
- Heat exchangers and boilers
- Chemical processing equipment
- Expansion joints and bellows
- Oven components and heat treatment.
AISI 321 exhibits excellent weldability using standard methods. For better results, 347 filler wires are used because titanium does not transfer well across the arc. The machining level is medium, and it tends to harden upon machining. It possesses good cold and hot formability properties. In terms of heat treatment, it requires annealing at 950-1150 degrees followed by rapid cooling.
AISI 321 remains a versatile and reliable option for demanding applications requiring high-temperature stability and corrosion resistance. Its titanium stabilization distinguishes it from AISI 304 grades, making it a preferred choice in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and chemical processing.
In short, AISI 321 is a stabilized austenitic stainless steel in the 300 series, very similar to AISI 304 but alloyed with titanium to improve its high-temperature performance.
The elements that make AISI 321 special are:
- The most important feature of AISI 321 is the stabilization of titanium.
- Titanium combines with carbon to form titanium carbides.
- This prevents chromium carbide precipitation.
Consequently, it is resistant to intergranular corrosion, especially after welding or exposure to high temperatures.
Its main features are as follows:
- Excellent corrosion resistance.
- Very good high-temperature stability.
- Good weldability
- Good oxidation resistance up to approximately 870 degrees (intermittent) and up to approximately 925 degrees (continuous).
- It is not magnetic when annealed.
Common uses include:
- Aircraft exhaust systems
- heat exchangers
- Expansion joints
- Oven parts
- Chemical processing equipment
- Automotive exhaust manifolds
Consequently, AISI 321 is preferred when, in addition to the corrosion resistance of AISI 304, better performance is required at high temperatures or after welding.
