The ASTM D2584-18 standard, developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), defines a test method for determining the ignition loss of cured reinforced resins. This ignition loss is considered as resin content within the limits set in the standard.

Ignition loss describes the process of measuring the change in weight of a sample after it has been heated at a high temperature that causes some of its contents to burn or volatilize. The weight change of the sample is monitored during the heating process. This test is important in determining the organic matter content of the sample in materials such as sediment, sludge, soil and waste. Inorganic materials such as cement, lime, calcined bauxite and refractories are also tested by loss of ignition.
Briefly, the percent weight lost during ignition gives a rough measure of the organic content of the residue. In general, percent loss in ignition values shows an inverse relationship with percent dry weight values.
When applying the test method described in the ASTM D2584-18 standard, three 5 g samples must first be conditioned for at least 40 hours under appropriate conditions. The weight of the samples is then measured on an analytical weighing balance to the nearest 0.1 mg. After that, the samples are placed in pre-weighed and pre-dried ceramic or metal cups and placed in an oven at 565 degrees plus/minus 28 degrees until all carbonaceous material is gone. The crucibles are then cooled. In the last step, after the crucibles are weighed, the ignition loss is calculated.
Resins are widely used as adhesives, coatings or as a building material when a strong bond is required. For example, resin is used in the production of laminated wood structures. Resins are also popular for decorating self-leveling floors and architectural surfaces that allow the use of recycled materials.
In order to accelerate the curing and to ensure rapid hardening of the resin, the working environment should be around 18-21 degrees. When the job is complete, the temperature can be raised or the part can be moved to a warmer area.
Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides standard testing services for the ignition loss of cured reinforced resins, within the scope of ASTM D2584-18 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
