The practice defined in the ASTM G53 standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) includes basic principles and operating procedures for using fluorescent ultraviolet (UV) and condensation apparatus to simulate degradation by sunlight and water as rain or dew.

The application defined in the standard, whose full name is “ASTM G53-96 Application of working light and water exposure apparatus (fluorescent UV condensation type) for exposure of non-metallic materials”, is limited to the method of obtaining, measuring and controlling exposure conditions and procedures. It does not specify the optimal exposure conditions for the material to be tested. Sample preparation and evaluation of results are covered in ASTM test methods or specifications for specific materials.
During testing, samples are alternately exposed to ultraviolet light alone and condensation alone in a repetitive cycle. The UV source is a series of fluorescent lamps with lamp emission concentrated in the UV range. Condensation is produced by exposing the test surface to a heated, saturated mixture of air and water vapor, while the back of the test specimen is exposed to the cooling effect of ambient room air. The exposure condition can be changed by selecting one of the following: fluorescent UV lamp, timing of UV and condensation exposure, temperature of UV exposure and temperature of condensation exposure irradiation level.
The use of the device within the scope of this application is intended to simulate the degradation caused by water as rain or dew, and by ultraviolet energy in sunlight. It is not intended to simulate degradation caused by local weather events such as atmospheric pollution, biological attack and exposure to salt water.
Results change when operating conditions change within the accepted limits of this practice. For this reason, a detailed report is given at the end of the tests.
Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it has given for businesses in various sectors, our organization, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, within the scope of ASTM G53-96 standard, working light and water exposure apparatus for the exposure of non-metallic materials ( fluorescent UV condensation type) also provides testing services.
